Rocky Mount Instruments (RMI) was an American manufacturer of electronic keyboards founded in 1966 as a subsidiary of the Allen Organ Company. Based in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the company specialized in portable instruments that blended organ, piano, harpsichord, and synthesizer sounds, drawing on transistor-based circuitry that Allen had been developing since the late 1950s.
The brand is best known for its fully electronic electric pianos, which differed from competing electromechanical instruments by Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Hohner. Notable products include the RMI Electra-Piano, the Rock-Si-Chord, and the RMI Harmonic Synthesizer / Keyboard Computer. The Electra-Piano saw wide use among rock and progressive-rock keyboardists in the late 1960s and 1970s, with players such as Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks, Todd Rundgren, and Frank Zappa associated with the instrument. The Rock-Si-Chord found favor with artists including Garth Hudson of The Band and Sun Ra.
RMI ceased production in 1982, as polyphonic synthesizers like the Sequential Prophet-5 and Oberheim OB-X displaced its product line. Its instruments remain collectible among vintage keyboard enthusiasts for their distinctive fully-electronic tone.
