Roger was a German guitar brand founded by luthier Wenzel Rossmeisl and named after his son Roger Rossmeisl. Rossmeisl, a jazz guitarist who had learned luthiery in Mittenwald, began building archtops in the early 1930s after a trip to the United States where he encountered Gibson jazz guitars. He produced instruments under the Roger name from the late 1930s until around 1962, making it one of the few serious guitar manufacturers operating in Germany during that era. Operations were based in Berlin, with additional production set up in the instrument-making town of Markneukirchen.
The brand is best known for its carved archtop jazz guitars and for originating the so-called "German Carve," a distinctive recessed channel hand-carved around the perimeter of the top. Models included the Roger Junior, Standard, Ultra, and Super archtops, often fitted with DeArmond pickups such as the Rhythm Chief. In 1947 Wenzel and his son built what is generally credited as the first electric guitar made in Germany, a lap steel.
Roger Rossmeisl left Berlin for the United States in 1953, where he went on to design influential instruments for Rickenbacker — including the Capri series that became the 300-series — and later led acoustic development at Fender. Original Roger instruments are now sought after by vintage collectors and jazz players; the brand itself has not been in active production since the early 1960s.
