Rossco Wright is an Oregon-based luthier and guitar innovator who has been a full-time professional guitar technician since 1971. After spending six years in the repair department of a major instrument importer and running his own authorized repair shop for 30 years — servicing Martin, Gibson, Fender, Takamine, Ovation, and Alvarez/Yairi — Wright turned his decades of hands-on experience toward building original instruments. In 1993, he co-invented the SoloEtte Travel Guitar with Frank Nakatsuma, a compact nylon-string instrument designed for traveling classical guitarists. The SoloEtte gained international attention after appearing on CNN and made history when astronaut Chris Hadfield brought one aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis to present to Russian cosmonauts at the MIR Space Station. Wright built over 5,300 SoloEttes in Eugene, Oregon, and licensed the design to Aria Guitars, who produced an additional 25,000 units.
Wright's signature innovation is the Wright Pegbox™, a patented design that relocates the tuning gears from the headstock into the guitar body. This results in better balance, improved tuning stability, and a shorter overall instrument length while using standard lightweight tuners. The Wright Pegbox is incorporated into his handcrafted electric guitars, including the NightCat series of semi-hollow jazz guitars and the TE model. Each instrument is built by hand in limited quantities, typically released three at a time. Grammy-winning classical guitarist and Juilliard faculty member Sharon Isbin, jazz guitarist John Stowell, and fingerstyle champion Muriel Anderson are among the players who have endorsed Wright's instruments.
