SAFE (Semantic Audio Feature Extraction) is a suite of free audio plug-ins produced by Semantic Audio Labs, an academic research initiative led by the Digital Media Technology Lab at Birmingham City University in collaboration with the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary University of London. The project explores how natural-language descriptors — words like "warm," "bright," or "crunchy" — can be mapped to low-level audio effect parameters, building a crowdsourced dataset (SAFE-DB) of semantic annotations contributed by sound engineers and producers worldwide.
The SAFE plug-in family includes SAFECompressor (dynamic range compression), SAFEEqualiser (parametric EQ), SAFEReverb (algorithmic reverb based on Martin Eastwood's MVerb engine), and SAFEDistortion (overdrive). Each plug-in lets users tag the sound they are creating with descriptive terms, contributing to a shared database that in turn allows others to recall settings by typing in semantic descriptors. The plug-ins are released as open source under the GPL and run on Windows and macOS in any DAW supporting VST or Audio Units.
Research from the project has been presented at venues such as the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR) and the Audio Engineering Society, with key contributors including Ryan Stables, Brecht De Man, George Fazekas, and Thomas Wilmering. The plug-ins are aimed primarily at audio engineers, producers, and the music information retrieval research community rather than the commercial pro-audio market.
SAFE Semantic Audio has 3 products cataloged on Equipboard, including EQ Plugins, Distortion Plugins, and Reverb Plugins.
