Scherl & Roth is an American maker of orchestral string instruments — violins, violas, cellos, and double basses — aimed primarily at students, school music programs, and intermediate players. The company was formed in 1932 when Max Scherl and Heinrich Roth, a violin maker from Markneukirchen, Germany, bought out the Simson & Frey firm and renamed it Scherl & Roth. The operation moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1938, where Roth recruited European-trained luthiers to set up finishing and adjusting standards for school-grade instruments produced at scale. Those shop standards went on to influence the Music Educators National Conference specifications for student strings.

In the postwar years the firm expanded beyond strings, acquiring the F.A. Reynolds Company in 1946 and producing band instruments under the Reynolds, Roth, Regent, Emperor, and Contempora marques, including the Stereophonic bass trombone introduced in 1958. The brass operations were divested in 1961, and the company returned its focus to string instruments.

Scherl & Roth is now a brand of Conn-Selmer, distributed through major retailers such as Music & Arts, Sweetwater, and Musician's Friend. The lineup spans entry-level outfits like the SR41 and SR61 series through more advanced step-up violins such as the SR81, with parallel violas, cellos, and basses sold as ready-to-play outfits with case and bow. The brand remains a common starting point in U.S. school orchestra programs.
