Schneider Guitars is a one-luthier custom guitar shop founded by David "Dave" Schneider, based in Bearsville, New York, in the Catskills near Woodstock. Schneider began building guitars in the 1970s, studied under archtop master Jimmy D'Aquisto, apprenticed with lute maker Lawrence Brown, and traveled to India to learn sitar construction. Every instrument is built from start to finish by Schneider himself, and his work draws on the D'Aquisto lineage, including a soundboard bracing pattern adapted from his teacher.
The shop's output spans custom acoustic guitars (dreadnoughts, jumbo flat-tops, and classical), solid-body and archtop electrics, and a range of Indian instruments such as Saraswati veenas, swaramandalas, ectaras, and Indian door harps. The flagship line is the SoHo Collection, a pair of archtops — the SoHo 16 (pin bridge, 16-1/2" lower bout) and the SoHo 17 (tailpiece, 17-3/8" lower bout) — built with European spruce tops, German maple backs and sides, ebony fretboards and bridges, a 25-3/8" scale, and a Circle of Sound bracing system inherited from D'Aquisto. The SoHo archtops use four K&K transducers mounted to the bridgeplate rather than under the saddle.
Alongside new builds, the workshop handles repair and restoration of acoustic and electric guitars — neck resets, fretwork, brace and electronics work, vintage restorations — and is one of the few shops in the U.S. that services Indian instruments including harmoniums, tambouras, veenas, sarods, swaramandalas, and sitars.
