Founded in 1872 by German immigrant Albert Schoenhut in Philadelphia, the Schoenhut Piano Company is one of the oldest toy and children's instrument manufacturers in the United States. Albert Schoenhut revolutionized the toy piano by replacing fragile glass sounding plates with durable steel ones while working at Wanamaker's department store, then launched his own company to manufacture improved toy pianos. By the early 1900s, Schoenhut had grown into the largest toy company in America and the first U.S. toy maker to export products to Germany.
