Sharp Corporation is a Japanese electronics company founded in 1912 by Tokuji Hayakawa in Tokyo and headquartered in Sakai, Osaka. The company takes its name from one of its earliest products, the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil, and over the decades expanded into radios, televisions, calculators, and a wide range of consumer audio equipment.

In the late 1970s and through the 1980s, Sharp became one of the dominant manufacturers of portable stereos and boomboxes alongside Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and Toshiba. Models such as the GF-777, GF-800, GF-9000, GF-9494, and the smaller QT-50 were known for their large multi-speaker designs, dual cassette decks, and high output. The flagship GF-777 in particular became a fixture of early hip-hop and breakdancing culture, and was famously pictured on the cover of LL Cool J's debut album "Radio."

Beyond portable stereos, Sharp has produced shelf systems, mini and micro hi-fi components, home theater receivers, soundbars, wireless and Bluetooth speakers, and headphones. The company's audio output sits within a much broader electronics catalog that also includes televisions, kitchen appliances, solar cells, and display technology.
