Founded in 2007 in Hillsboro, Illinois, Sheptone is a boutique guitar pickup manufacturer specializing in handcrafted PAF-style humbuckers and vintage-voiced pickups. The company traces its origins to founder Jeff "Shep" Shepherd's quest to replicate the tone of his 1958 Gibson "Patent Applied For" humbuckers at a more accessible price point. After over a year of winding, testing, and comparing prototypes against original PAFs, Shepherd launched the business with the Tribute humbucker set, which remains a cornerstone of the lineup. Proprietor Josh Vittek builds each pickup entirely by hand, one at a time, using proprietary butyrate bobbins molded to original PAF dimensions, plain enamel wire, and rough cast Alnico magnets.
Sheptone's product range spans humbuckers, Stratocaster and Telecaster single-coils, P-90s, and bass pickups, alongside nickel-wound guitar and bass strings. Notable humbucker models include the Tribute (the original PAF replica that started it all), the AB Custom (a medium-output PAF variation), the Heartbreaker, Blue Sky, 7078, and the Brian Kahanek signature set. The company also offers the "Good Enough For Leo" single-coil line and various P-90 configurations. All pickups are built to order with lead times of roughly four weeks.
Sheptone pickups have found their way into the rigs of professional touring musicians including Keith Scott (Bryan Adams), Danny Kortchmar (James Taylor), Shawn Tubbs (Carrie Underwood), Keith Nelson (Buckcherry), Yohei Nakamura (Stevie Wonder), Brian Wooten (Trace Adkins), John Norum, and Al di Meola.
