Sherwood was a house brand of the Montgomery Ward department store, sold through the company's mail-order catalog primarily during the 1940s and 1950s. Like Ward's better-known Airline label and Sears' Silvertone line, Sherwood instruments and amplifiers were not built in-house but contracted out to established American makers and rebadged for catalog distribution.

Guitars carrying the Sherwood name — including hollowbody archtops such as the Sherwood Deluxe — were built in Chicago by Kay, fitting into the broader tradition of postwar American student-grade instruments. The amplifier side of the brand was handled by Danelectro in New Jersey, with the Sherwood Master 8422 and 8423 ranking among the largest and earliest Danelectro-built amps. The Master 8423 added an 8" permanent-magnet speaker, and the circuit was an early adopter of separate bass and treble tone controls.

Sherwood was a catalog-house label rather than a player-facing brand with its own dealer network, and production tapered off alongside the broader decline of catalog-store instruments. Surviving Kay-built archtops and Danelectro-built Master amplifiers turn up on the vintage market, where they are collected as artifacts of postwar Chicago and New Jersey instrument manufacturing.
