Sho-Bud is a Nashville-based manufacturer of pedal steel guitars, lap steels, and related instruments, founded in 1955 by Shot Jackson and Bud Isaacs (the company name combines "Sho" from Shot and "Bud" from Bud Isaacs). After Isaacs departed, steel guitarist Buddy Emmons joined Jackson, and the company became closely identified with the development of the modern pedal steel guitar and the "Nashville sound" of country music in the 1960s and 70s. Jackson's sons David and Harry later joined the business, with David contributing to the design of the company's "all-pull" changer mechanism, which became an influential standard in pedal steel construction.
The brand's product line has included the Pro series (Pro V, Pro VI) professional pedal steels, the entry-level Maverick, and the SlideKing lap steel, alongside Sho-Bud-branded strings, hardware, and NOS parts. In the 1970s the company expanded into acoustic guitars and, in partnership with Gretsch, produced Sho-Bro resonator-style instruments. Gretsch acquired the Sho-Bud name in 1979, after which production wound down.
In December 2024, the brand was reacquired by Dawn and Will Jackson — grandchildren of founder Shot Jackson — who relaunched Sho-Bud with updated versions of its classic models, including the Pro V, the Maverick II with an aluminum-and-maple body, and the SlideKing LS lap steel. The company also operates out of Nashville and offers repair and restoration services for vintage Sho-Bud instruments.
