SHOE Pedals is a small, hand-built guitar effects operation that began in Brooklyn, New York, where the founder — then a graduate student at NYU living in Greenpoint — started building circuits as a hobby with electronics knowledge passed down from his father. The earliest design grew into the Silver Apple, and the brand's name came from labeling a prototype's footswitch with a sharpie reading "SHOE" and an arrow pointing to the button.
The lineup centers on fuzz and unusual gated/synth-style dirt pedals built in small batches. Notable models include the Pixel, a gated fuzz known for chiptune and 8-bit synth-like single-note tones (popular on bass as well as guitar); the Robert, a fuzz inspired by the Baldwin-Burns Buzzaround associated with Robert Fripp; the Spitvalve, a fuzz known for a brassy, trumpet-like character; and other designs such as the Ancient Astronaut and Savior Machine. SHOE Pedals is closely linked with VAV Synths under the same umbrella and operates as a small, made-to-order shop rather than a mass-production company.
