SmithsonMartin is a Toronto-based music technology company founded by Alan Smithson and Pablo Martin, specializing in multi-touch MIDI controllers and software for DJs, producers, VJs, and lighting professionals. The company's flagship product, Emulator, turns any Windows touchscreen into a fully customizable controller with faders, knobs, buttons, encoders, XY pads, and more, supporting MIDI integration with software such as Traktor, Ableton Live, Virtual DJ, and Resolume. The Emulator and its companion hardware, the Emulator DVS, won the 2011 DJ Mag Tech Award for Most Innovative DJ Product.
SmithsonMartin's hardware lineup has included the Kontrol Surface 1974 (KS-1974), a 22-inch multi-touch control surface, the larger Kontrol Surface 32 (KS32) with a full HD 32-inch touchscreen, and the Dual View Screen (DVS) system. The Emulator platform has been used by artists including Flo Rida, Linkin Park, Morgan Page, Thomas Dolby, Infected Mushroom, and Gabry Ponte of Eiffel 65. Pablo Martin, a DJ and software developer with over 30 years of experience, created the original Emulator concept, which evolved from his earlier MonoTouchLive project — a touchscreen MIDI controller for Ableton Live first released in 2006.
The company appeared on CBC's Dragons' Den and operated for a period under the name Touch Innovations before returning to the SmithsonMartin brand. Emulator v3, the latest version of the software, is available as a free download, with macOS and Linux versions in development.
