Sound Forge is a digital audio editing application originally created in 1992 by Monty Schmidt at Sonic Foundry. It was one of the earliest professional Windows-based waveform editors and helped establish the workflow conventions for nondestructive sample-accurate editing, batch processing, and audio restoration that many later DAWs adopted. The product line passed from Sonic Foundry to Sony in 2003 and then to Magix in 2016, and has remained a fixture in mastering, broadcast, post-production, and forensic-audio workflows on Windows.

The family is split into two main tiers: Sound Forge Pro, aimed at engineers and producers, and Sound Forge Audio Studio, a lighter consumer-oriented version. Pro versions support high-resolution audio up to 64-bit/768 kHz, multichannel editing, VST3 and ARA2 integration, and bundled processing from iZotope (RX Elements, Ozone Elements) along with Sound Forge's own restoration, repair, and mastering tools. The application is known for its single-window waveform-centric interface, event-based editing, and a long-standing reputation for fast, surgical sample-level work.

Beyond music production, Sound Forge has historically been used for spoken-word and audiobook production, vinyl and tape transfer/restoration, sound design for film and games, and as a quality-control and final-tweak tool alongside other DAWs. Its scripting support and batch converter are commonly cited features for engineers handling large libraries of files.
