Spalt Instruments is the workshop of Austrian-born luthier and artist Michael Spalt, who builds one-of-a-kind electric guitars and basses that blur the line between musical instruments and fine art. Trained as a painter at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, Spalt founded the operation in 1997 alongside his LA Guitar Garage repair shop in Los Angeles before relocating his workshop to Vienna and later to Portugal.

The brand is best known for its Totemguitar series and Hybrid series, which incorporate hand-cast resin tops, reclaimed wood, and found objects — sometimes centuries old — embedded into the body. The Guitar Barrel Project, which repurposed 18th-century Brazilian mahogany wine barrels into playable instruments, is a representative example of the workshop's approach. Each instrument is built as a unique piece, and the shop has produced more than 700 guitars to date.

Beyond his own builds, Michael Spalt is a co-founder of the Holy Grail Guitar Show and the European Guitar Builders Association, organizations that helped formalize the boutique luthier scene in Europe.
