Starfield was a guitar and bass brand created by Hoshino Gakki, the Japanese parent company of Ibanez. The name is a literal English translation of the founding family's surname, Hoshino (星野). While Hoshino had used the Starfield name on earlier Gibson-style copies, the brand was relaunched in 1992 as a higher-end side project producing modern-retro instruments, with a Made in USA series and an SJ (Starfield Japan) series running in parallel. Production was discontinued in 1995.
The core lineup centered on two electric guitar shapes — the twin-cutaway Altair and the single-cutaway Cabriolet — built around bolt-on necks with oil-finished backs, edge-offset dot inlays, 22 frets, and an unusual 25" scale length sitting between Gibson and Fender conventions. The bass line comprised the CBB400 and CBB500 four-strings, both with alder bodies, bolt-on maple necks, rosewood fingerboards, and a barrel-anchor bridge/tailpiece design. The CBB400 ran a P/J pickup configuration with a pickguard, while the CBB500 used a pair of lipstick single-coils.
Starfield instruments are now collectible on the vintage market, primarily traded on platforms like Reverb. The brand has a small but devoted following among players who value its short production run, Japanese and American craftsmanship, and the modern-retro design language that pre-dated the broader 1990s offset and boutique revival.
