Synsonics is a brand introduced by Mattel Electronics in 1981, best known for the Synsonics Drums — an inexpensive analog drum machine (model 5281) that combined four stick-played rubber pads with six onboard sounds: two toms (one tuneable), snare, cymbal, closed hi-hat, and kick. The unit offered eight memories of sixteen steps, tempo and accent controls, and produced its sounds through simple analog circuitry rather than samples. Marketed largely as a toy, it nonetheless drew endorsements from Buddy Rich, Carmine Appice, and Nigel Olsson, and was used by Kraftwerk and the Canadian progressive rock band Saga.
The line also extended to budget electric guitars sold in 3/4 scale, most recognizably the Synsonics Terminator, which featured a built-in speaker and, on some variants, an FM radio. These instruments were aimed at the entry-level and youth markets through mass retailers rather than music shops.
While Synsonics products were short-lived in their original run, the drum machine in particular has become a cult favorite among vintage drum machine collectors, lo-fi producers, and circuit benders, who prize its idiosyncratic snare and cymbal voices and the way its analog architecture responds to modification.
