Tandberg is a Norwegian audio brand founded by Vebjørn Tandberg in Oslo in 1933 as Tandbergs Radiofabrikk. The company began by manufacturing radios — early models included the Tommeliten, Corona, Huldra, and Sølvsuper — before opening a Kjelsås plant in the early 1950s and releasing its first reel-to-reel tape recorder in 1952. Tape machines became the brand's defining product line and earned a global reputation for engineering precision and Norwegian build quality.

The brand is best known for its reel-to-reel tape recorders and, later, its high-end cassette decks and tuner-amplifiers. Notable models include the Model 2 Hi-Fi of 1956, which introduced three tape speeds for improved high-frequency response, and the Model 6X, which used a cross-field recording technique to extend bandwidth beyond competing decks of the era. The TCD 3014 cassette deck and the 3034/HIFI 3020 series are still regarded by collectors as among the best-performing consumer tape machines ever made. Tandberg reel-to-reel decks were used to record meetings in the White House Cabinet Room during the Kennedy administration, including sessions tied to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Tandberg manufactured reel-to-reel recorders in Norway from 1954 to 1988, and in the late 1960s shifted from vacuum-tube to solid-state designs. The original consumer audio operation wound down in the late 1970s, and a successor entity, Tandberg Data, was spun off to focus on data tape and storage. Vintage Tandberg gear — particularly the cassette decks, tuners, and reel machines — remains actively traded on the secondhand hi-fi market.
