Founded by luthier Joe Veillette in Woodstock, New York, Veillette Guitars is a boutique instrument workshop specializing in unconventional and innovative stringed instruments. Veillette began building guitars in 1971 after taking a class with luthier Michael Gurian, originally to repair a broken Gibson J-45 headstock. He previously co-founded Veillette-Citron with Harvey Citron in 1976, a partnership that pioneered neck-through-body construction and produced what is widely regarded as the first production baritone guitar, commissioned by musician John Sebastian. After that partnership ended in the early 1980s, Veillette established his own shop in Woodstock, where he builds instruments alongside luthiers Ande Chase and Jimmy Eppard.
Veillette Guitars is best known for the Gryphon, a short-scale (18.5") 12-string guitar tuned in unison courses that can emulate the sound of a mandolin, bouzouki, or cuatro. Other signature models include the Merlin (an octave-high 12-string), the Terz (a compact instrument tuned to G or A), the Minotaur short-scale bass, the Swift 12-string electric, and a range of lightweight doubleneck guitars. The more affordable Avante line, manufactured in Korea, brings Veillette's designs to a wider audience. The company also produces the Deep 6 baritone conversion neck for Fender-style instruments.
Veillette instruments are played by a range of notable musicians spanning multiple genres, including Dave Matthews, Kaki King, Colin Hay of Men at Work, Jorma Kaukonen, Neal Schon of Journey, Earl Slick, and session guitarist Tim Pierce. The shop's design philosophy prioritizes engineering and playability over ornamentation, employing innovations like a single-bolt neck joint and zero frets.
Veillette has 4 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Steel-string Acoustic Guitars, Electric Basses, and Extended Range Guitars. Their gear is featured by 3 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock. Notable users include Brian May, Billy Sheehan, and Anthony Phillips.
