Wildlife Acoustics is a Maynard, Massachusetts–based company founded in 2003 by Ian Agranat that designs bioacoustics monitoring equipment for biologists, researchers, conservation groups, and government agencies. It is best known for its Song Meter line of autonomous, weatherproof field recorders — including the rugged SM4 and SM3, the compact Song Meter Mini, the bat-focused Mini Bat, and the pocket-sized Song Meter Micro 2 — which can be deployed for long periods to capture birds, frogs, insects, bats, and marine life.
Alongside the hardware, the company develops Kaleidoscope, an analysis software (offered in Lite and Pro editions) used to sort, cluster, and identify species from large volumes of field recordings. Its ecosystem also includes accessories such as ultrasonic microphones and hydrophones aimed at expanding the frequency range captured by its recorders.
While primarily a scientific and conservation-oriented brand rather than a traditional music-instrument maker, Wildlife Acoustics products are sometimes used by field recordists, sound designers, and ambient or experimental musicians who incorporate natural soundscapes into their work.
