First Musical Accolade

I've gotten accolades in visual art a couple times but this is my first musical one, ranked #1 / gold out of 10,000 submissions on the largest "edm based" label's talent pool for my track "Into You".

My next goal is to get on Soundcloud's top 50 chart during summer. (school kinda takes up a good chunk of time right now) would be nice if it happened with this compilation I'm gonna put out, a 30+ minute mix / set of 14 un-released tracks I spent the last 6 months working on.

thanks... and congratulations to you on learning to change your virtual dj skin. "clap clap"

Congrats! Keep 'em coming. :)

GEAR:
  • EarthQuaker Devices Westwood
  • Fender '57 Custom Champ
  • Fender American Original '50s Telecaster

Whorse, this is VERY cool! Congrats, it's a big stepping stone for sure to get that recognition.

For those that don't know, Spinnin' Records is one of the "big guys" when it comes to house/edm/etc record labels. Here's the link to their Talent Pool, with our main man Whorse at the top :)

Whorse, how'd you manage that? I'm sure some of our community members would love to hear how you went about it. How'd you get your track out there and get votes?

I just listened to it, it's really solid, nice work. That vocal sample is great, as is your sound selection. Nice work on the mixing as well, sound nice and balanced to me. You've got a nice collection of gear... what are some of the main tools (synths) you used for this track?

GEAR:
  • Fender Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar
  • Big Ear Pedals Woodcutter
  • HeadRush FRFR Go Portable Desktop Amplifier

Is there somewhere I could see your stuff? Actually wait, that was stupid, you more than likely did all you album art and other stuff by yourself. Also, congratulations.

Thank's means a lot

as for promo, well I'm really into marketing, I do a lotta lil things to promote myself, for example here's one I did using parody law, I created a fake music festival and ran advertisements for it, like this one,

http://i.imgur.com/S4mspMH.jpg

all the names are mispelt in a funny way except mine (thus protecting me under parody law), but anyways when I was raving and stuff, I noticed a big way a lotta people learn about new artists are from flyers like the one above, so with facebook's very precise way of shaping the demographic you want the ad to appear to, 30$ goes a long way, and a lotta people saw my name next to all these other big artists. (most people didn't even realize the names were mispelt and even shared the ad for the festival on their own pages and tagged friends. on the actual ad I had it in mp4 not jpg like above, so my music played with a lil animation)

so like I do a lotta lil stuff like that to pick up traffic, than once you have a following run another ad for like 10 bucks letting friends / fans know "only takes 2 seconds to sign up, (you can use your facebook account) and help me out by voting for my new track"

as for the gear, I used a moog minitaur (bass), korg ms20 (lead), novation bass station (mix in / break / mix out bass), ni massive (drop stabs), and refx nexus (Brass)

well it has increased both mp3 sales and streaming / ad revenue by 100% this month. (I don't think that alone did it though.)

other than that I think it's good branding to just have my name in a key spot for four days in a row let it burn into peoples minds a little.

I don't think it'll do too much else now because the momentum is dying down, so from now its just a nice credential for my portfolio.

thanks, not really into disclosing too much personal info but its a uh a ok school.

Aww hell, and I was going to stalk you. I only asked because I took illustration in school though I never worked profesdionally apart from rave and punk flyers when I was a student.

awe yea? thts pretty coo, got any work i can see?

I haven't done visual art in earnest for some years so no, nothing hosted on the old interweb...

plus I am an 'all-analog' guy with visual art just like with my guitar sound so t has always been a pain in the ass to get larger format pieces on to the web, especially mixed media stuff with an insane amount of texture or a 3d sculptural element... I never took to photoshop even though it was getting insanely popular and was a course requirement already when I was in school... with music and art I am in an age bracket where there was a lot of overlap between the old way of doing things and the digital way when I was ratcheting up my skills in both areas, but when I was a green recruit in illustration, guitar and electronic music there was very little use for the computers of the day in the arts other than MIDI, so I have a serious attachment to tape machines, tube amplifiers, bulky old keyboards, paintbrushes, razorblades, india ink etc that can make my artistic endeavours harder to share thru the web than would be if I used more computer earlier in the process creating them

the only thing I oughta have around somewhere in maybe jpeg format are those flyers I did between '98 and '04ish when I was embracing photoshop a bit more, but they very well be backed up to an antiquated storage format like zip or jazz drive LOL

although a lot of my punk rock flyers and posters were done without a computer, I used to like to hand cut silk screens for shirts and posters and then print a few sloppy test runs myself one color at a time before sending the screens off for a pro screen printer with mechanical equipment... yes CUT them, not draw something and then transfer the image chemically... I just used to freehand them with an exacto knife from my sketches...

but I embraced photoshop for rave flyers (particularly around '00 when promoters sprung for really nice stock and full color digital printing), though almost everything started out as a freehand drawings done with a sharpie or some other ridiculously unprofessional marker that were scanned and colored in the box with text added from fonts I created freehand... time consuming and I don't know why I bothered since I wasn't getting paid more to be so meticulous
