I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (Documentary with Steve Aoki)

This DJ from explosive personality is already a star , but the memory of the successes of his father urges him to never stop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYrittJaatM

Netflix has announced a documentary on DJ Steve Aoki, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead:

I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, directed by Justin Krook, is a heart-pumping yet heart-wrenching documentary about one of the most eminent DJs working today: Steve Aoki.

In the lead-up to Aoki’s biggest show of his career, this introspective doc examines the driving force behind his passion: Rocky Aoki, daredevil showman, Benihana founder, and Steve’s looming father figure.

From producers Matthew Weaver (Rock of Ages), Matt Colon, Happy Weaver and David Gelb (Chef’s Table, Jiro Dreams of Sushi).

Steve Aoki: I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead debuts on Netflix Aug 19, 2016.

Guest Star: Steve Aoki, Tiesto, Afrojack, Pete Tong, Diplo, Travis Baker, Blink 182.

The film explores Steve’s origin story through the lens of Rocky Aoki’s origin story as a thrill-seeking, Olympic-qualifying undefeated flyweight wrestling champion in the early ’60s. His desire to entertain (and build his empire) came at the cost of a relationship with his youngest children. With the majority of the interviews given by family members (including supermodel and actress, Devon Aoki), close business associates, and Steve’s girlfriend, we learn less about the excess of the DJ world and more about the pain fueling one of the nicest dudes in the game.

I watched this last week, I really enjoyed it. I never knew Aoki's father Rocky Aoki was founder of Benihana. It was a very interesting behind the scenes look at a producer and DJ who works very very hard.

I definitely recommend it. If anyone's wondering, it's on Netflix.

I am familiar with Rocky and Japanese steak house culture, but you'll have to forgive me for having no idea who Steve is.... what type of electronic music does this guy spin? This generic EDM stuff? I guess I'll look him up before tackling the documentary tonight.

Yeah, Steve Aoki is an electronic music producer and remixer, and I would say he's best known as a DJ/performer. I guess you could say musically it's sorta generic EDM stuff, but he knows the formula that works. He's very over the top, and has some crazy signature moves he does during a show like throwing out an inflatable raft and crowd surfing on it...

As well as "caking" people...

It's polarizing stuff and lots of people view it as a huge gimmick, but on the other hand he's taking the showmanship to a whole new level and people seem to love it. The documentary is worth watching just to see the inner workings of someone who works tirelessly to make their dreams come true, and to see how influential he and his record label Dim Mak were in his early days (I believe he discovered the band Bloc Party which is pretty cool). There's also the whole aspect of him trying to win his father's approval which I thought was super interesting. The Aokis are an interesting family in general.
