bleep bloop, synth party, bleep bloop

I need a bigger stand for the ancient polysynths now! I think 4 tiers is the limit in any safe level of sturdiness... I guess juno, prophet, maybe poly61 and either the dw6000 or esq1, tough call...

somewhat drunk ass playing with this expansive pad thing I made today

that's unapologetically digital alright... but thick & fizzy, instead of whispy and fizzy (as if that means anything, sorry for the lame adjectives).

The Vangelis-y pitch envelope starting at 1:13 is a nice touch.

GEAR:
  • Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer
  • Roland SH-101

I have so many analogs this is like a breath of dense, grimey distopian neuromancer air(smog?)! it has this machined steel korg style joystick that's fully assignable for X+. X-, Y+, Y- via the matrix that has the best feel of any pitch/mod interface 've ever touched. I like side to side pitch bend up and down and 2 non related parameters on Y up and Y down

edit: dude I have a lot of synths, I just looked in my walk in closet and I need to cool it... they get played though

did I tell you the end of my juno6 journey? seller backed out and returned my money! Throwing in the towel on the whole idea. I'm about to buy a kiwi modded korg polysix instead and possibly sell my poly61 if its not different enough from the six and the prophet. It has a special filter sound and its DCOs, but I have a feeling between the mks30, polysix and prophet it'll be overkill and its the worst programming interface. The korg polysix chorus/phaser/ensemble is as nive in its own way as the juno chorus and way more versatile. I just lose the punchy DCOs with simultaneous waveforms and the roland filter, but I get midi, SSM VCOs and filters, and a lower pricetag.

Sorry to hear the seller backed out. Did they give a reason?

Do you think you'll turn a profit upon selling the Poly61?

I'm not sure, I don't have a lot into it.... I might keep it though. Its sort of its own thing. Not a polysix and not a jx3p

I did it, I pulled the trigger on a very nice condition, kiwi modded polysix with th a fresh battery, cleaned up power supply and all the works for about what i paid for the aborted juno. I was watching a comparison video and found I prefered the sound of the korg. I'll miss the simultaneous wave shapes but my prophet does that. I'll miss the high pass too, but oh well. I don't think I gave the polysx a fair shake when I've played them in the past. I feel a early 80s poly video coming on, maybe a polysix and prophet medley. I might mod the output for stereo, apparently it can be made into true stereo modulation FX somehow, I'll have to look at a schematic. Juno's just off the table. Every time I'm going to get one I get something else I wind up liking better. The prophet, the mks30, and I have a feeling the polysix will really scratch my japanese poly itch as its got the pre juno VCO sound without having to spring for a jupiter 4 (an 8s out of the question). Now that jupiter 4 though, mmmm....

Congrats Jim!

Hard to argue against opting for the Juno's 2-OSC, MIDI-equipped competitor if price is the same. I'm sure this new PolySix will bring a ton of joy. As per usual, keep us posted if you pop any sound demos on Soundcloud.

the polysix is actually 1 oscillator too, its just VCO, the midi is a retrofit. They came out about the same time give or take 6 months. 81ish. The poly6 isn't as tuning stable and its 1 wave shape at a time, but its otherwise similar architecture.

this kinda sold me

https://youtu.be/RrHrtVgZPrA

my favorite juno type sounds actually sounded better on the polysix and I couldn't really understand why i didn't like the ones I've played before and I hope the problem was me or a poorly maintained example. Its just the juno plusck sounds that the korg is weaker on, the somewhat mroe sluggish envelopes, free running VCOs and lack of hipass are a bummer, but my mks50 and mks30 excel at those snappy sounds.

But watch me chasing another juno6 in 3months LOL

Oh the shame! I really thought the both the poly6 and 61 were dual osc, not just the 61. Thank you for correcting.

I DID know that the 6 was originally MIDI-less... I was assuming a Juno-6/60 with a retrofit would cost hundreds more... perhaps I'm mistaken there too...

Your experience mirrors my own in a way, re: trying to get "that" juno sound, only to find it was made on a Korg. I think I recounted on the thread earlier, but finding out the pad on 808 State's Pacific 202 was a Poly61, not a juno 106, as most of the internet opines, was an eye-opener.

I remember you mentioning that and the 61 has that characteristic sound, it really does. Its not that different from the juno really. Juno's chorus is better to my ear. The DCOs sound the same but you've got 2 of 'em, the fitler is its own thing. Korg has had a lot of filter varieties over the years, but roland by 1980 was settling into 2 characteristic designs, the jupiter/juno stacked ladders and the x0x fitlers and eventually settles on one really; The IR2109 that creeps up in the jupiter 6 first and then turns up various other places and is closely related to the 106 chip. Everything gets that fitler until they go all digital. And that's a watered down jp8/ju6 fitler really.

korg you get SSMs and the weird proprietary filter, among other things over the years. They're allover the place.

and yeah, modding these synths is an expensive PITA so tis great to get one pre-modified....
