Have you ever saved any gears on your Equipboard Wishlist?

Hey all, Jovian here! I'm currently helping Michael and Giulio with some stuff and want to understand a bit about the Wishlist on Equipboard.

If you ever saved any gear on the Wishlist, I'd love to learn more about why you do that. What was on your mind when you hit that "Save" button? Did you ever come back to that list?

If you never save anything on the Wishlist: do you know there's a Wishlist?

Would love to learn more!

GEAR:
  • Fender Stratocaster MIM
  • MXR M169 Carbon Copy
  • JHS The AT Andy Timmons Signature

I'm currently building a wet/dry/wet stereo rack guitar rig where I'm combining the best of analog and digital elements. Depending on my finances as well as what I need to secure as soon as possible, my wishlist priorities are constantly changing. Because of this you'll see my wishlist updating every month at least.

GEAR:
  • Ibanez RG652FX
  • Ibanez S521-MOL
  • Blank slot

I use it both as

  1. an organizational tool, to remember everything that was ever on my radar and
  2. as a true wishlist, as in I actually would like to buy most of this stuff in the future.

With so many things competing for my attention all the time, I'd like to get email alerts like, "hey remember this synth you wanted? Well a new low price was just seen..." Even if I'm not ready to pull the trigger right that instant, it's a nice reminder. I would at the very least open the email for sure. I don't think I'd be annoyed, since I kind of opted into that by putting the item on my wishlist. And anyways I would imagine there would be an option to turn off email price alerts.

That's my vision on how the wishlist gets more useful, but I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.

GEAR:
  • Fender Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar
  • Big Ear Pedals Woodcutter
  • HeadRush FRFR Go Portable Desktop Amplifier

Hey all, Jovian here! I'm currently helping Michael and Giulio with some stuff and want to understand a bit about the Wishlist on Equipboard.

You lucky skunk. Congrats on the new gig! Doing User Research, or will you be coding some of these solutions too?

I use the Wishlist as a way to remind myself of what I'm on the lookout for, and to prioritize what's on that shopping list. I might see some cool sale and want to bite on it, but I'll check my wishlist to see if that shiny new thing is really more important that the stuff already on my to-buy list. Hard to keep track of it all in my head, this is a way to externalize, organize, and prioritize.

I check back on my list at least once a month.

Got it! So let's say you have saved up for a gear you need, do you go back to Equipboard and purchase from that Wishlist?

You lucky skunk. Congrats on the new gig! Doing User Research, or will you be coding some of these solutions too? Hahaha thanks man! It's awesome to be here. I'm not a programmer so I'm helping Giulio and Michael on other stuff. They're the masterminds :)

Thanks man! So when you check back on your list, what do you do? If you find "the right" gear, do you purchase via the Equipboard link?

My earlier thoughts: https://equipboard.com/forums/general/topics/black-friday-equipboard

Thanks for this! So you mentioned: "Would anyone else here appreciate alerts on wishlist items that happen to go on sale?" -> I think this is something that I personally would also want to have. Out of curiosity, personally, how would you like to be alerted? Would you want to be alerted only when:

a.) there's a HUGE sale for the item on your wishlist. Basically "Black Friday" huge

or

b.) there's a drop in price on the item e.g. This pedal is $150 but it's now $135, which is not that significant

or would you want an alert for both?

So when you check back on your list, what do you do?

re-organize, prune a few items, add a few items.

If you find "the right" gear, do you purchase via the Equipboard link?

So far, I haven't purchased anything from my Wishlist via an Equipboard link. I don't have any impulse purchases in my wishlist, they are things where I'm going to check every site and try to find the best price.

eg. I can probably get a mint-condition Push 2 off craigslist for $500 (I'm in Los Angeles, the getting is good), and anything I buy used off Reverb, I'm probably going to ask the seller a few questions first, so I'm not sure if the link to EB would still apply by the time I'm done asking questions and making offers.

The items I'm likely to use a direct EB link for are things with a well-defended MAP price that are hard to buy used, like Spectrasonics software, or something new and boutique that isn't likely to be on sale, like the Polyend Tracker... but in both cases, I'd only be using the EB link as a way to consciously try and help EB out... because I'm still going to first check sites that don't have an API-link to EB, like my local shop, Perfect Circuit, and then circle back to make a point of purposefully using the EB link.

If I had smaller/cheaper items in my list, like cables and guitar strings, I'd be more likely to just hit the EB link and buy without a lot more searching. I'm generally a very fussy comparison shopper. Much more a "Maximizer" than a "Satisficer". I get physically ill when I spend money. Take my feedback with a tiny grain of salt.

Re: How: I'd want communication via an email AND a red-bubble alert here on the site. With an option to turn off email alerts if they got to be too much. There currently isn't perfect parity on EB between items that trigger an email notification and items that trigger on on-site red-bubble notification... I'm sure this is by design, I'm not 100% sure that there needs to be parity for every type of communication... but for price alerts one is specifically setting up/opting into, I would want parity/both types of notifications at once.

Just tell me the threshold you're using as a %. Ideally, I could set my own threshold, but I think a default or hardwired threshold of like ≥ %25 off MAP would be just fine for most of us. Guitar Center is doing 15%-off most things most months, but 25%-off or greater is harder to come by.

this! I'm a reverb haggler on vintage/used items.... and I ay not even be looking for a particular item when I go into negotiations, I may just see it on my feed and go "hmmm, I wonder if I can get that for less then asking because it might be worth owning at bargain basement prices! On a day to day basis I'm trying NOT to look for gear... I have lots. I went through my vintage polysynth thing recently, yeah but that was a bunch of private deals.... and then there were the console wars, still ongoing as I modify the whole studio's wiring. Damn 32 channel desk is making me cable poor. I guess I should be htting those cables through EB, but a good number of them are custom looms/snakes I'm getting from these dudes in Alabama because the great price/performance ratio.... sweetwater will bleed you dry on insert and db25 snakes.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

The wishlist is like a dream shopping list! I'll go around the internet snooping on other people's rigs and if I find something I like, I just save it in my wishlist. Cos sometimes I forget these names and model numbers. It's really convenient to have them in one place.

(Back in high school my wishlist was on the back of my notebook together with a list of possible band names lol)

GEAR:
  • Tokai SG-50s
  • Marshall AVT150H Half Stack
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Black Beauty

My wishlist is really just a bunch of things I really wish to some day own. I'll probably never get around to owning most of it, but I do like having a place where I can go back as a reminder of what I had my eye on. I have an excel spreadsheet that I haven't moved everything over from but I do like keeping a wishlist on here as well so that I can have a visual reminder of what everything is and quick links.

I haven't made any purchases through Equipboard yet, but I do like the suggestion of getting an alert if something goes on sale. I typically buy things from my local music store to support local business (and they have been so great to me, my latest guitar was actually one I got through winning a contest they were having) and they obviously can't carry everything I would dream about owning. So even though, my next big purchase will probably be from my local store, it would be good to be aware of discounts on other gear I'm thinking about. This way I can compare and contrast different pieces of equipment available to me and make a decision.

GEAR:
  • Reverend Warhawk DAW
  • Gibson Les Paul Standard
  • Friedman BE-OD Deluxe

I tend not to use my wishlist because I'm pretty content with my setup, but I will do so every once in a while for peripheral utility ideas. However, I tend to find that the best deals at any given time are not always on Reverb and Sweetwater, so it's not always an optimal deal tracker.

GEAR:
  • sE Electronics V7
  • Fender Vintage Series '57 Stratocaster
  • Blank slot

Hey thanks!

So after you save it on your Wishlist, what did you do when you want to actually buy any of the items there?

list of possible band names lol

Anyone who doesn't have this ain't a real musician lmao

GEAR:
  • Fender Stratocaster MIM
  • MXR M169 Carbon Copy
  • JHS The AT Andy Timmons Signature

Thank you! Where do you usually find these deals if I may know?

Thank you! Props for supporting local businesses man :D — can you recall the last time you actually buy a piece of gear online? If yes, why did you buy it online instead of your local store?

but I do like the suggestion of getting an alert if something goes on sale.

Me too!

Well I do tend to get some things online. Like I recently bought guitar picks from a company called Honey Picks because I wanted to try them out. I also got the fat guy little coat fuzz from Thirty7 FX. He’s an independent builder out of Massachusetts. So it’s usually unique items that I figure my local store will never have. That’s a motivator for me.

I’m a grown man with no friends that want to play music with me, and I still keep a running list of possible band names in my phone haha.

You're welcome! It varies. In the past, I noticed that the best deals were B-stocks on ProAudioStar and used listings on Guitar Center or eBay.

Hey thanks!

So after you save it on your Wishlist, what did you do when you want to actually buy any of the items there?

For bulky items, I'll look for used or marked down gear locally (Craigslist, music stores) before considering online stores. If it's just a cable or a tuner, I might just order online since shipping wouldn't cost that much.

GEAR:

I have a lot of stuff saved - much of it is for reference only however. So for example I might have a Proco Rat listed and next to it I'll have premium and budget alternatives but I'll most likely just buy the one. Amazon's wishlist feature is a bit more useful to me for this however since it allows one assign a priority - "lowest" "low" medium (blank) "high" "highest" and to add notes to remind myself why I wanted it, cite sources etc.

I'd like to see Thomann.de linked. Their huge European website is truly international €-£-$ and delivers worldwide. I'll rarely buy anything from the US on account of the really high postage fees. EU, China and Japan are much more reasonable in that respect, sometimes even free!
