How can I be designated as an Artist ?

I sent a message through the "contact us" thing at the bottom of the page asking this question, but now for the second time, my question has been ignored.

I am an artist, so how can my account be made to show this ? Thank you.

you didn't answer at all.

I didn't ask the question for the good of my health. I asked because I wanted an answer, so if you're a moderator, can you please just answer me ??

the short answer? if you want an artist page you can just start one, we haven't implemented any restrictions yet even though the mods and admins really frown on this behavior and I loudly and categorically discourage you from making one for yourself.

Its like the old joke, "how do you get to play Carnegie Hall? PRACTICE." You need fans and one of them would start one for you. That's how equipboard is meant to work. Its currently a bit dysfunctional as we haven't figured out the best way to discourage or prevent people from using it at cross purpose. Why do you want an artist page? All the user and artist pages look the same now. We're breaking down that abarrier as the whole concept of a music star disolves into history amidst social media and a global plague. And if you feel you're making art then you're an artist and you don't need us to give you the stamp of approval anyway. Be secure, excelsior!

there, I tried my best to answer nicely

Hi Carbinax,

First of all, I'd love to know - what would you like to see on your profile to show that you're an artist?

The reason I ask is because there are two types of accounts on Equipboard - profiles like yours and mine, and ones that can be edited and contributed to by anyone. And to Jim's point, we're aiming to eventually make them nearly indistinguishable.

I haven't looked through all your social media stuff or Googled your name, so I don't know what type of "fame" level and exposure you've had, but the latter type of profile only makes sense if you think there are many fans out there who can't wait to contribute gear to your profile.

Like, it wouldn't make sense for ME to do that, because I'm not a famous artist in the least so my profile would just gather dust... also we sort everything by popularity so mine would be buried.

Instead I manage my own page where I can list my gear any way I want, write reviews to say what I think of it, etc. And I see you've done that to an extent.

So, that begs the question - what would you like to see on your profile that would make you more happy with it? Is it missing the genre & role tags (e.g. Producer, Guitarist, etc)? Is it missing being able to attach photos of your own gear? Do you just want some kind of verified "check" that designates you as someone who creates music and performs live?

If you tell me, there's a good chance we'll build the feature. 🙂

perhaps we should make it so users can start their own pages but other users cna add to them like any artist page that WASN'T created by the artist. We're all artists in a sense and if someone on here achieves 15 minutes of fame and hasn't been updating their page another user could add an item they saw them using on youtube or whatever.... which is an unlikely but potentially cool scenario!

exactly, if you've got few or no fans the page will languish... if you wanna use it in like a electronic press kit it won't be helpful if booking agents for instance (if we ever have live music again) follow your link only to see that you're the only contributor to your artist page, it'll work against you and that would suck. Trust me, I've been at this a long time and used to be a 'pro' and I know how these animals think.

It just seemed that there were "verified" artists who had some kind of seal of approval.

I've just released my 20th album, been played on BBC radio , and will be in issue 288 of Computer Music next month, so even though I don't tour, my music has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times over the course of the last 20 years.

I take my art very seriously, and very much consider myself an "art"ist, so I didn't want to feel I was on the wrong side of a "them and us" situation. The only differences I see between me and those of my contemporaries that have achieved some measure of fame, is luck and location.

I don't say any of this, or seek it, from a position of arrogance, just from a position of elbow grease, tenacity and sheer dogged determination, and knowing I work harder than most I know.

I always put my equipboard link at the bottom of my album release pages on bandcamp, so anyone can look and see what I used without me having to list it all.

For this reason, I also really hate the fact that I used to be able to see everything on one page, but now have to click "see more" about 10 times before all my equipment is seen in one page. I have no idea why you thought it was "broken". It worked absolutely fine, but it takes far too many clicks now, and therefore too much time, to see all the things on one scrollable page.

I don't know what you mean by "music easel". Is this some feature I seem to have missed ? I have done a few short reviews and my gear score never seems to move anymore, despite having added about 10 VSTs that weren't on the system and I added them and the photos to the database. As for a video review.......anyone outside the UK might struggle to understand a Northern Irish man's accent =)

It's not the hardware version. I only have the Arturia soft synth, but for some reason, iot ended up being tagged as hardware. I've had to take screenshots of vsts quite a few times now because they weren't yet on the system, or it was a UAD version of something rather than a Plugin Alliance version. I never got round to fixing the easel.

Here's one of my more obscure albums. Look in the bottom right hand corner. 35,000 downloads in the last 6 years https://freemusicarchive.org/music/2ndMOUSE ( this was my former alias ) That was just one album that was set to free, but I have 20 albums.

................

Is it missing the genre & role tags (e.g. Producer, Guitarist, etc)? ( Yes I think so )

Is it missing being able to attach photos of your own gear? ( that would be nice too _

Do you just want some kind of verified "check" that designates you as someone who creates music and performs live? ( yes....something that shows you aren't just a hobbyist, and take it very seriously, would be great )

"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened. Obi-Wan Kenobi,"

It's ok Obi-wan...I simply and suddenly labelled my buchla soft synth as hardware. but don't sweat it Benny boy because Fear on no Buchla is the path to the dark side…fear leads to anger… anger leads to hate… hate leads to toxic gear acquisition syndrome. You must BE the Buchla. Yes......BE the Buchla, and the Buchla will be strong in you.”

One of the things that made me ask this question about being an artist was, and I've just been reminded of it a few seconds ago.......when you go to the page for the Korg Monopoly vst, and it says "10 artists use this", so I think " I own this........I'm an artist........so I should also be on that list so it says 11 artists use this"

that seems fair, if you're out there putting music out periodically, like legit music for humans with ears, maybe selling a few copies or getting youtube hits on a video or something. It seems weird when its a guy who isn't really doing anything.... I come down on a lot of people like that for making pro pages but I don't see myself as a pro. I'm done with that right now and I'm really an enthusiast. I don't release everything I create and I don't finish music very often and I seldom play out. I rarely even turn up to live stream with my boys in trash godz. I wish there was a way to distinguish btween guys who are taking it seriously and if not monetizing it are out there attempting to reach people andlike 12 year olds with a crack of fl studio or oldsters like me who from the 'making it' era who never 'made it' really and mostly stopped worrying about an audience a long time ago.
