Studio Monitors-Any Recommendations?

I am long overdue for a studio monitor upgrade (Currently have AV40's). I have been looking at the KRK Gen3 6". I produce primarily rock, blues, and acoustic music, but do work with all other genres on a periodic basis. My price range is limited to $400-$450 for the PAIR (or $200-$225 per monitor). Any Suggestions? Thank you!

That's a healthy budget! You can afford just about everything on that list.

I haven't used these yet, but this seems to be a great deal on a product from a trusted company with great reviews. Klipsch R14-M

If that's not interesting to you, check out the guide to our favorite monitors here. My personal vote from these would be the KRKs or Yamahas for your price range.

Because it should... like... match up to the size of the woofer? o_O

I have steered away from KRK because they are bass favouring, and primarily recommended in reviews toward dance and electronica.

I play guitar based stuff and find they would not be as suited to my needs.

Work with the size of your room to decide if 5's or 8's are the call. You want to give the monitors something to do, not be playing back at such low volumes that they do not get to use their design... but you know this.

I am working toward either Yamaha HS5 or Fluid Fader F5 in my build, and will make that final decision when I get to A/B them in a showroom. They come in 8's if you could manage more headroom.

Prices on this page are AUD$ but the read ups are there.

If that's true, looks like I need an upgrade :)

My recommendation for studio monitor:

JBL LSR308

I am a known passive Yamaha and Tannoy fanatic, but I also like the Adams with the ribbon tweeters, the JBLs that digitally adjust to your room (forget the model, but they are some of my favorite actives), Event's Tuned Reference series, and anything with dybaudio mid and bass drivers including dynaudio's own powered monuitors....

but really I an not that into powered speakers as the biamp setup on most sounds hyped to my ear and I think I mix better on a couple different sets of passive monitors using my own power, whenever I sue my powered monitors I come up with dull, midrangey mixes until I flip them to passives or listen in the car LOL.... YMMV though

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

I have heard good things about Tannoy's, i have also considered the Reveal 802s

After having listened to some music through the KRK's, I was not impressed with them, they are very bass favoring. I was surprised how much I liked the M-Audio BX8 D-2.

I always forget about the M-Audio BX8s.... I've created some decent rough mixes on them in other people's project studios and they are certainly more than adequate to monitor sounds while setting up mics etc during a tracking/overdub session
