We are redesigning the artist page and I want your feedback and ideas

Hey everyone - We are redesigning the artist page template and I want your feedback and ideas. These are the most popular pages on Equipboard, so I'd love help to make sure we get it right.

So a few pointed questions:

  • What would you add to the page that isn't there now?
  • What is the biggest issue you have with the artist page now?

Thanks!

GEAR:
  • EarthQuaker Devices Westwood
  • Fender '57 Custom Champ
  • Fender American Original '50s Telecaster

It's maybe a little bit far-fetched. I think that each musician should have an archive page. So they can archive their past equipment. If there is a small charge for that, maybe like a dollar month. It'll be worth it. It would be like insurance especially in the case where what just happened to me. I lost equipment.

Q: What is the biggest issue you have with the artist page now?

Image loading speeds.

This is a site-wide performance issue, but it's especially annoying when browsing Artist pages.

Does anyone else spend too much time staring at this?:

I think more than anything I'd just like to see a proper implementation of Dark Mode, that's kinda what I want more than anything

Sounds like you're talking about your own personal gear/profile page perhaps, not the artist pages where people contribute gear to (e.g. John Mayer).

When you save any gear on the site to your own Equipboard, you're presented with a popup that asks which list you want to save it to. You can choose an existing list of yours, or create a new one. I've seen many users make a Had or Used to have or Past equipment list ... hope that helps!

Yup I hear you. We're gonna take a proper pass at page speed as a whole with this upcoming redesign (including image loading speeds). The redesign is a great chance to bring many things to 2024 standards. We'll make sure it's very fast.

I want dark mode also, we'll make it happen with the redesign. We're upgrading things under the hood, and the new tech we're using plus the new branding standards will make dark mode pretty easy to implement :)

Yeah the possible. Thanks!

Q: What is the biggest issue you have with the artist page now?

You have to scroll and scroll and scroll to view all of an Artist's gear entries.

I wish there was a way to see more than 1 piece of gear at a time on mobile and more than 3 at a time on desktop.

The current design feels better-suited to a social media website with an endless feed, where there is no way to see "everything", and the point is just to keep you scrolling for as long as humanly possible. Even Amazon does 3+ at a time on mobile for shopping and 12 at a time for browsing videos. If I'm shopping for a Strat on fender(dot)com, they'll show me 4 at a time on mobile and 6 at a time on desktop.

Does anyone struggle with finding/browsing items on Artist profiles if any single category has more than a dozen items?

In a word, YES

Hi all! I want to update this thread with progress so far.

  1. We hear you on the image loading speed issue. Giulio took a pass, and the site has been much quicker for me. Hopefully, you guys are seeing the same. Let me know if anyone is still experiencing speed issues.

  2. I wanted to share our designer's first pass at the revised artist page.

I have already asked for a version that shows more products at one time (as several of you requested that), but I'd love to hear any other thoughts you have.

Thanks!

This was a huge strength of the original artist page design. More items fit in the main view. It felt more immersive and museum-like. I also found it easier to navigate between categories; the leftward, vertical sidebar was compact and thus easy to follow. Right now, the current horizontal bar cuts off categories if they don't fit on the page; one might not be aware that there are other categories to side-scroll to. Speaking of which, I just noticed that the quantity number displayed in the header for "Other Gear" (or whatever other category is last) is clipping behind my scrollbar on desktop.

Hmmm... Not sure how I feel about introducing streaming links, let alone as the first set of items under the artist's bio. I'd much rather switch the rows: Genre and Groups first, then links second.

How do you all feel about something like this?

  • There is a selection where you toggle the view between 3 items or 1 item per row
  • The menu is back on the left-hand side of the page instead of the current side scroll version

What is the high priority info for these item cards? If you're OK do drop the price and affiliate link info on the smaller card view, then I'd recommend dropping it for all card views. That said, if you guys see having the prices and affiliate links in the item card as a high priority, then put it in all card views.

Personally, I'm not big on having 2 different view modes... I almost always just stick with the default on most sites I frequent (I'm lazy like that)... though, I certainly understand the urge to please everyone when designing stuff, destructive as it can be... I've definitely been there.

  • The menu is back on the left-hand side of the page instead of the current side scroll version

What would this vertical menu look like on mobile? I'm not seeing an obvious responsive breakpoint/solution.
