What is this site really for/about?

Hi,

I'm wondering where this site is for/about. Is there anything u can do here? There's not alot of guitars on the site too and I just don't see what you can do with it all :P.

Hi Nigel,

We're musicians and we always wondered what kind of gear our favorite artists used. There wasn't really a single place to find this kind of information, and when you could find it there generally wasn't any proof of the artists actually using what they were claimed to have used.

We thought there should be one place people could go to discover the gear their favorite artists use. That's why we built Equipboard.

The core of what we do is catalog the gear influential artists use, like you've done with your great submissions for Joe Satriani and Dimebag Darrell.

As you've discovered, you can also share and review the gear you have on your own Equipboard. It's fun to share the things we're proud of, and it's often helpful to hear what other people think about their gear.

I'm curious, as you've done most of the things that are possible on the site, is there anything you feel is missing? We're still learning and trying to build this together with the community, so any feedback you have is most welcomed.

Hi Simfonik,

I knew that indeed this site was made to look up the gear musicians/artists use. I really like this idea and you've totally nailed it with Equipboard. What I really meant to ask was "is there anything else you can do with Equipboard than looking for musician's gear and sharing instruments?". I like the parts I know now about Equipboard, especially searching on the net what instruments, amps and effects musicians use, and the fact that you can share it on social network.

Brilliant.

nigelblaazer I agree with you, I really like the concept of everyone's tools of the trade in one place, and this site is nailing it. I love hunting down gear personally, it feels kinda like a game 😄

I think one thing that's missing for me is that it seems like loads of people are creating profiles and writing about their gear... but I'm not sure where to go to see it all. I don't have time to find individual people's profiles, and even if I did there is not a great way to do that.

I like the gear gallery, but wish there was more stuff like that!

When I did my masters degree in New Media, I did one project about communities that grow up organically around passions. Back then (2006), there were lots of websites dealing with an individuals sound (I spent ages talking to people about Pixies gear and recreating the guitar sounds on Debaser as one of my outcomes), but nothing that pulled all this stuff together in one place. It would be great not just to share the gear we have, but also some of the ways in which we use it. A competition to see who can get closest to the guitar sound on a particular track (How Soon is Now? anyone?), along with a description of the process and a tutorial on how to play. Collaborate on tracks?

I can see lots of things to do here.

Hi, that is an amazing way to explore our favorite musician equipment and gear. It is useful to comparison and benchmark over what use for every kind of song or style. Awesome...

Hi Guys,

If you're taking suggestions, how about a minimum review length of 100 words? I've seen many reviews that barely make it to the end of a sentence...!

Cheers

Thanks for the kind words and great ideas, everyone. Keep them coming. We're always reading the forums, it's a great way for us to see what you all are liking/disliking.

spacem8 - agree with you m8 (sorry couldn't resist), we need to do a better job of showcasing what members are doing. We recently launched the Recent Activity feed, and plan on expanding it. Right now user reviews and gear submissions to artists are showcased, but we plan on showing when members submit brand new artists, new gear, photos of their gear setup, and more. We also wanna do more with the Gearporn gallery - don't worry, it's totally safe for work ;)

andychannelle - you nailed our mission - to pull everything together in one place. If you like the Pixies gear, we want you to find a particular delay pedal they used, then perhaps dive into researching what the most used delay pedals are in the community, and how other people are using them, and ultimately perhaps help you make a purchasing decision. That's the type of exploration we want to foster.

horse_to_water - Completely agree with you here. As much as I love people's enthusiasm, a review that says "I have this" or "Great plugin!" is simply not as useful to the rest of the community. A minimum review length is definitely something we're going to talk about within the team.

Keep the advice coming guys, we also thrive on constructive criticism - if enough people yell at us about something, we'll make it right!

this site is actually for getting information or buying musical instuments and other stuff of music

I found this board looking for equipment lists of Alton Brown, a chef I really like but although I found his equipment on this site, related to Kitchen Gear it does seem to be targeted toward musicians, largely if not almost exclusively.

The question comes that I'm wondering first how in the heck anyone added kitchen gear here when all you can do is search for musical gear, and when I looked at how to add equipment, it only offered choices related to music.

I am a visual artist, not a musician and would love to see this site expand into this type of equipment.

Is there something I'm missing in how to add non musical equipment to your list or find others?

Thanks, great idea and site and has great potential but I hope to see it branch out into other fields of art/trade.

Just play the guitar since the age of seven , but you always have to learn ...
