I just forgot I owe my dad $1000 bucks. Damn. I think I can only grab 1 bass this season.

hmmm, paying your dad back is awfully responsible! Its definitely not selfish.... you are going to lose Gear IQ points on that one....

Hey Boom, nice to meet ya.

That sucks I just had to pay my dad back for an amp and guitar, he fronted me the cash. You going with that Atilla one or the Carvin bass? My first guitar teacher was a bassist and would only use Carvin Guitars/basses..

Also lol at Jim's comment...

Wait can you actually lose Gear IQ points on here??

It's hard to decide because they are both a steal.

Carvin is tung oiled, 34' scale neck with ebony fret-board and stainless steel frets, 2 Jazz single coil Carvin pickups surround a custom made MusicMan humbucker which was made in Chicago to not have dog ears and to match 19mm string spacing. The bass has matching tung oil pot knobs, a selector switch to select the musicman from paralel, to series, to off. An Aquilar preamp was dropped in. Has a super deep tone for just a 34 scale bass and is a 5 string. I reckon it was about 1300 to make and I'm going to likely get it for $800. Only add-ons I would do would be to make a stainless steel nut to match the frets.

The Atelier is a MIJ jazz bass with the same pickup config from factory. Jazz, MM, Jazz. Has only 4 strings and it being a Japanese bass, the neck will be tiny.... incsy... bitsy.... I love that. The bass sounds great in the private videos I was sent. Owner is more of a slap guy so it's not super clear what tones I will be using will sound like. Add-ons I would like would be a hipshot D-tuner and MAYBE Bring the bridge back an inch to make it 35 inch scale. The bass sells normally for 2,000-2,500. I would be getting it at 1250.

I'm conflicted. I play 5 mostly, but I have been wanting to get a 4 string for certain things. I don't like Jazz basses enough to own a lot, but I do need 1. I've had my eye on that Carvin for 6 months and it still hasn't sold somehow. I love owning instruments few others have, and having a Japanese bass that is kind boutique fulfills my needs in that front, however, having a one of a kind bass made from a kit and customized even further would be cool too. I still have to use $300 on a new computer chair, $200 on a lighting rig for my videos, about $500 on new clothes, and $600 on a cruise ticket that my mom wanted me to take with her at the end of the year. I can make payments on that but I would prefer to knock it out. When it comes to my 4 string with a drop tuner, I was wanting to emulate a Wal bass for the longest time. Find a body from Lakland or G&L that matches a wal and then customize it to sound like one, but I'm not really a TOOL fan anymore and having a bass that sounds just like 1 guy's bass is a bit of a turn off now. I just want a 4 string that has a range of tones so I can play older stuff from funk, to Iron Maiden, to Rush. It's just there for songs that I don't need a 5th string and need to move fast over. I play Maiden and Rush on 5's, but it would be nice if I didn't have to mute that extra string.

I had found a Music Man HH for sale about $1200 off shelf price but it's not as alluring to me as these 2 basses. I nearly sold the Death Bass "Takamine GE400" to a guy in Austin but he wants 50 bucks less than what I want for it. I'm strangely attached to it and there were things I wanted to do with it, but I never play it. My friend said I should just sell it at 750 and use that money for the other basses. Hard times in the first world.

This is the Carvin I'm looking at.

Personally I love the music man stingrays with 2 bass humbuckers. But that's my taste in bases and I am not really a bassist. The carvin sounds like a steal. Carvin realy does a bangup job on basses. I find fault with some of their stuff, but for the modern bassist seeking a quality American instrument they are fantastic. Never played a clunker bass from Carvin.

EDIT: That Carvin video sums it all up. Bass sounds killer to me through my little monitors even thru youtube AND its pretty.... plus, the seller is having so much fun laying down the funk, I have to give some credit to the bass. It must be a killer that's fun to play. Buy it!

I just did some spring cleaning and ebayed a bunch of crap. Auctions are going well already. I think the proceeds are going to fund one of these from a Japanese guitar pusher who reached out to me last week:

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/OuwAAOSwBLlVFFL3/s-l300.jpg

its a 1980 MIJ small-bodied semi-hollow that predates the similar ES339 by 20 years. COOL! lacquer, fret edge binding, 42mm nut width, bound top, back and F holes, gotoh pegs, solid abr1 and stop tail clone, decent maxon PAF or T-Top copies of the classic MIJ era... I need to own this guitar. Its decided.

hes letting her go below market because she's pretty beat up (picture is not the actual guitar), but one man's wear is another man's relicing and for this price I am going to bite assuming I can keep my out of pocket $100 or less after all my ebay junk ships out!

I think she'll be #10 in electrics....

and maybe a POD HD500X if no one outbids me (and they probably will, I will not pay a lot for digital technology, ever)....

  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Well... I'm getting both. Shot offers for the Carvin AND the Atelier Z. I couldn't talk myself out of the Atelier. It sounded too goo din the videos I have, the neck looks so dang small, and it looks nice. I've been reviewing the company online and it seems people view them in a high respect. The ability to switch between a Jazz sound to a Stingray sound instantly is a plus too.

Nice! how many basses have you got now?

So the digital doohickey I was bidding on went outta the price range I will pay for an effects unit so I am putting it off for awhile. I did pick up a spare Brimar EF86 for the preamp of my Matchless. I want to save my spare Mullard mesh plates for when the supply dries up. No one makes a good EF86 anymore, such a shame... but that only cost me $25, so I need to make a decision.

I could roll my ebay loot into an old es339 type of semi-hollow from the 70s/80s site unseen and hope I love her or for $100 more dollars I could buy my friends mid-60s Blackfaced Fender Tremolux head. For those not in the know the Tremolux of this era is a glorious mutant, kinda like a Bandmaster with a 5U4 rectifier tube instead of the diode bridge rectification. She puts out a reputable 30 watts versus the bandmaster's 40 to 45 and has nice compression on the clean tone that puts her a little more in the small blackface and tweed camp. Less thump, but still with the signature blackface Fender mid-scoop. Maybe I should buy her as a replacement for the Bandmaster I sold to fund the ex-wife's dental needs? Thoughts?

EDIT: schnapp... I was looking at bandmasters online and there's a store near me selling a cherry 65 like the one I sold for a scant 600 bucks... it doesn't have the cab but I am so over that shit. I got $1200 for my mint head and matching cab, 600 is a steal even if that's what I paid for the head and the empty cab 5 years ago.... I am 90% ready to buy this thing and have a bandmaster again.... still my favorite BF for punchy clean tone without too much thump!

Basses that matter? 5 left.

Spector Legend 5

Takamine GE400-GT

Ibanez 305DX

First Act P Bass - This was so cheap that I am okay with doing experiments on it, yet, I've had it for so long I've grown accustomed to it's uses and don't want to just toss it.

Now, Carvin BK50A custom

Atelier Z 4 string

I should be good for a while with what I have. Only other basses that I am curious about for now are Warwicks. I'm still customizing the ones I have too. Spector needs a double battery box installed and routed, Carvin needs a stainless steel nut, and the Atelier is getting a hipshot Xtender.

I still have a Rogue PJ, Rogue Fretless PJ, and an acoustic Washburn bass. I had others but either sold the or they died.

5 is a good number.... 3 was way too few! good work. Bass deficit narrowly averted, Boom.

I am torn between a 10th guitar and 5th tube amp. I can't really afford both and I can abrely rationalize getting one or the other... barely, but I am rationalizing it :-(

must..... score.... 6L6.... fender.... amp.... or I will....... DIE!

preferably 40 watts or less, in a head, blackface, manufactured while Leo was still in charge of operations.... man does not live by Vox alone as it turns out.... I totally miss having a fender and its KILLING ME!

I'm in the position that I would prefer the Tube Amp, just to have one and experiment with it.

What all tube amps do ya have?

I would think you would want 2 of your favorite and most used, 1 high wattage, 1 low wattage, and maybe 1 more for good measure. I can't imagine owning 6.
