33 famous guitarists, their first guitars, and how they learned

Just posted this! It was fascinating to research what gear pro guitarists started out with, how they learned to play, and what their first song was.

Here's mine--

First Guitar: My dad's old nylon string guitar that was gathering dust in a closet, then graduated to a proper Ibanez steel string acoustic.

How I Learned: First "lesson" I did was self-taught, I printed out open chord diagrams and learned them all :)

First Song: Kama Police by Radiohead

What's the first song you learned on the guitar, and what were you playing?

GEAR:
  • Fender Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar
  • Big Ear Pedals Woodcutter
  • HeadRush FRFR Go Portable Desktop Amplifier

First guitar: Marshall Rocket Deluxe How I learned: Self Taught First song: Buffalo Springfield-For what it's worth

First Guitar: Some old Aria Pro II recovered from a church that our congregation moved to. That, and my sister's Yamaha FX acoustic.

How I Learned: Self-taught for the most part, but I started taking informal lessons and now taking college classes. I'm finally learning theory :D

First Song: Probably the introduction to "One" by Metallica. I could never get past the first repeated verses, and I hated the solo. Probably should try again.

First Guitar: Fender 1998 California Series Stratocaster. Looking back, I didn't have a great reason for getting that model, other than gravitating to it in Guitar Center. Not knowing anything about guitars, I'd always come back to the candy apple red strat. I flipped a lot of burgers to save enough money for that guitar.

How I Learned: Playing with other people and printing our the chords. Still working on it! :)

First Song: Dammit by Blink 182

GEAR:
  • EarthQuaker Devices Westwood
  • Fender '57 Custom Champ
  • Fender American Original '50s Telecaster

First guitar: Cheap Indiana acoustic guitar Mostly self taught with some help from my Dad I didn't have a first song i can remember of but the first i learned to play was the 12 bar blues in Em

I learned on my dad's espana classical that I now own, but my 1st guitar of my own was an early MIJ squire strat, black with a rosewood board.

I learned based on previous music experience along with a handful of chords my dad showed me as well as a major scale. I just kinda put it together from there. Being in jr high, highschool and a lil college jazz band helped a lot.

I can't remember what my 1st song was now.... it was probably a Beatles tune.

GEAR:

I took a course on guitar this semester, and I befriended this guy who seems to be in his late 20's. He brought to our final a Hurricane by Morris Equinox II, completely modified.

He sanded down the body to a beautiful natural colour, replace the pickups to an HS combo, both of which are practically humbuckers, added a red, white, and blue knob, one of which coil-taps, a switch that chooses the side of the humbucker to use, installed a Gilmour-style tremolo, removed the covers on the back, and finally replaced the string with some special kind that I can't place.

I wish I took a picture, it looks killer!

isn't that a poor man's charvel san dimas type of super strat from the 80s? they made a model called a hurricane that's more mustang sized too, right? a lot like that g&l jerry cantrel plays only with a Floyd (of course)....

Except more badass looking.

I thought that was the ross morris hurricane???

GEAR:

  • Gibson SG Standard

That's what it said on the headstock, but this is the exact design of the guitar.

I thought the hurricane and equinoxes were different models, but its been a long time! eh, whatever, its not a particularly good shred guitar.... you guys in LA should all be dripping in fancy stuff, the stores in LA, even the shitty ones, have such good inventory compared to most places in the northeast and are consistently better stocked than stores in the southeast which can be intermittent with amazing guitars and amps

you are so lucky to live where you do as an aspiring guitarist

so anyone wanna share their first song and first guitar now that we got off topic?
