Band reccomenadtions

I've been listening to a lot more prog metal recently, in particular Periphery, and AAL, are my favourites, though I really like other Djenty (Ah, I cringe) stuff, with weird rhythms, and odd time signatures. Can you recommend me some music in this style.

iwrestledabearonce kinda fits that genre. They're okay.

Dream theatre? Don't really know what they're like, just know they're progressive rock/metal. I don't like that stuff much, only progressive metal band I really like is Opeth

Dream theater are good, I've listened to them a bit, but I much prefer the periphery djenty heavier side of prog metal.

this is going to sound like a lame cop-out, but in this general idiom of progressive/alt-metal? Its Tool or nuthin' for me. They have the chops and the wild sounds like everyone else, but the songwriting and the emotionally charged atmosphere's they create with their tones are a distinct cut above everyone else who tries to fuse 70s prog rock and metal. When Tool plays in a weird time signature its smooth and natural feeling. It hardly jumps out at you as an oddball meter and it really adds soemthing to the song. Nothing they do feels like they are showing off their skills and writing music to impress other metal nerds. Maynard is also a great vocalist with a distinct style. You always recognize him in a few notes. Tool are a true original, a force to be reckoned with as heavy players, creative arrangers and above all appealing songwriters. Often imitated but never duplicated.

y'know, I checked that band out based on their rig rundown... I forgot all about them til you said their name here. Their stuff was awesome.

Yes, they're amazing, I got attention on them when they had just released their debut album and were touring with Tool. I still enjoy Enter a lot, but Station –their following release– evolved over with not only great compositions but also a more refined sense of sonic production which turned to fit perfectly on them.

Meniscus from Australia is fine too (their only album –War of Currents– bores me, but they have nice tunes in their debut EP –Absence of I– and new single –DBT–).

Yeah tool, are probably my second favourite prog band, only to Floyd. I also love Porcupine Tree, they're my third

They are one of the very best post rock bands around. Maybeshewill, Mogwai, Russian Circles, and this will destroy you, are my favourites.

Thanks, I'll check 'em out

Maybeshewill always seemed like a skinny copy of 65DOS to me.

I used to be a HUGE TOOL fan. Cult of Maynard and all. I watched them 4 times in 1 year and was completely burned out on them. Took me 2-3 years before I was able to hear them on the radio again. Now about once a year I'll make a mix cd of their stuff and listen to it on a road trip.

My personal belief is that they need to either kick Maynard out or make their own new band. Waiting for him to get his shit together isn't fare to them or the fans. Next TOOL album has been finished for a year and a half or so now music wise. From what I understand of it, they are just waiting for MJK to finish his side of things.

They've been touring every year, playing nearly identical set lists and putting on the same show over and over. You'd think they would put pressure on him and make him write something on the bus.

It's been 3,551 days since the last release. I thought it might be cool if they waited 10,000 days til the next album but not after doing the math.

Like System Of A Down want to make a album but Serj is refusing in a way

Yeah. With SoaD I think their best albums are behind them anyway. I didn't like the direction the last one went to. I love Their first 2 and Memorize. I felt like hypnotize changed their sound too much.

I was never so into tool that I tired of them. MJK is busy trying to make Arizona into a world class wine growing region... I can understand his lack of time and inspiration. Without him tool would be in a spot. At least hes ruining their careers doing something productive unlike scott weiland and STP.

I love all of them, though Daren on the last two was writing alot more of the stuff than Serj and just seemed Serj didn't have as much controbution to the album compared to the first 3
