surf sounding distortion

hey just wanted to know if anyone knows how to get tones like in the beginning riff of 'mess around' by cage the elephant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl7cF9bwNHE

there's a running 'how to get that tone' thread for this already

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

You can check out Cage The Elephant's rig rundown here:

Brad Shultz plays a Fender Mustang and uses a Zvex Vextron Series Mastotron Fuzz.

edit: Also, check his Equipboard, duh! lol

Yeah, It would have to be a fuzz, but if you want that tone, for a cheaper price, than the Mastodon, I'd buy a Muff, and turn down the tone

the vexter mastotron isn't very expensive on the used market, a decent muff is similar in price

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

I didn't realise that their was a vexter mastotron, and 2nd hand editions, are still £35 more than standard muff pis

who buys a plain old EHX muff these days? I mean, I've bought plenty of them off the shelf, but all of the ones I ahd are collectible by now

he could probably just get a handful of parts and make a mastodon with his soldering iron.... unless its vintage and collectible and you are speculating there's no reason not to just build most fuzzes, they are primitive!

True, fuzzes are pretty much as basic as it gets, but not everybody is prepared to just buy a soldering iron, and just build them, and you get quality assurance (ish) on branded pedals. Personally I prefer heavier fuzzes, so I built myself a fuzz factory, and at some point I'd like to build a woolly mammoth, but their are some more interesting muffs... I have the tone wicker, and the wicker switch is very useful, and opens up new doors (I know the tone switch is a pile of useless crap, but...), and apparently the deluxe muff has a very nice mids circuit, which sounds quite nice in my opinion,
