What were some guitars you played that disappointed you?

My main one would be a Blueridge acoustic, which sounded pretty thin considering it was a solid wood guitar.

Epiphone Sheritan II

The first Fender I ever picked up

Jackson 5 string Ellefson signature.

Gibson Nighthawk. For some reason, I had it in my mind that I wanted a Gibson, but wanted something smaller than a Les Paul. Couldn't get around the shape of the neck after getting used to my strat, so ended up selling it after it collected dust in my room for about 6 months.

  • Fender American Original '50s Telecaster

Fender seems to have some issues with their electrics. Or the people in stores do a shitty job of setting em up before they're up on the wall. I played a handful down at Music Go Round in Fort Collins and they all felt like they were set up by someone who's never held a guitar before.

It's not Fender. I've played Fender instruments that are set up beautifully, and when I go to any music store they're terrible. It doesn't help that they need to be set up again every two weeks.

i noticed this too with one of their Thinline Teles. For whatever reason every time I picked it up I had to play with the saddles to intonate it again.

Thinlines especially.

Well, this topic comes down to track records vs bad days. I have worked in music stores and played every instrument on the racks and the differences between two identical guitars can be staggering.

But to answer the OP: the ones I didn't buy.

I play based on feel and sound. If they don't meet what I am looking for, they go back. No one brand stands out, but there are incredible cheap unknown guitars out there, just as there are dogs in the top 5 guys stuff.

honestly, I have been disappointed by every new, off-the-shelf guitar priced under a grand that I've picked up since about 2008 except for the Mexi-made Fender classics and the sub-$1000 models in the new Yamaha Revstar and the Reverend line.... every other new guitar I've played at a reasonable price has been better than most of the herd USED TO BE but far inferior than the cream of the crop in the sub-$1000 category before the Chinese and Indonesians got so entrenched in the manufacturing.

And I haven't played a good epiphone in 20 years. They're more consistent but even the pricey ones suck a rat by my yardstick.

the only one that disappointed me was the 72 deluxe thin line tele, but that could of been the amp as well because i played the normal one(the walnut finish was beautiful) and it sounded amazing

Two weeks ago, Epiphone Dot Ebony. I've noticed that guitar apeared lately and it is true that it looks 100% charming. I was expecting at least average Epiphone level of quallity. But it took less than 10 seconds, after plugging it into Marshall Valvestate 45, to feel that guitar is a real rude word :) Muddy tone combined with emery-like neck and the price of 550 euros made me leave guitar shop. Just, no way to find solid new guitar. Offcourse, for the tone and the feel i seek within the music Maybe it works nice plugged into computer and compresed thru 3 software plug ins :)

To be honest, most Gibsons.. chunky necks peeve me on a guitar, I like to be able to play on a thin, wide neck. I played three Fenders and three Gibsons today, all different models, and to me the Fenders were better by FAR. I also tried an Ibanez RG350 and that beat the Gibsons to me as well, which I didnt expect.

My Carvin custom has a neck that you would love. Thin front to back and wide top to bottom.

It's this one in the BK5

oooooh.... that honestly sounds awesome. Carvin guitars... I've never tried one before.

I have a friend who found an old Guild guitar and I thought it would be something authentic.

Nope. Bridge is all fucky. Pickups are dead. Dead frets everywhere. Can't repair because there's no truss rod. WAAAAAY too light. Feels like a toy or a hunk of wood.

I feel the same about old Harmony and Kay electrics. Their only saving grace is a pickup that sounds shitty in (occasionally) a good way. It's way better to just buy a cheaply built modern electric and just drop some after market gold-foil copies in it.

most old guilds (pre 75ish?) are about 500 to a million times better than the dano, harmony, kay, supro, silvertone and airline guitars that are so popular now.

I suspect Narcy was talking about a 80s guild beginner model or something. Most of the Guilds made in Newark and Westerly are killer.

I'll get you a photo when I can, but I suspect you're right.

Some Gibsons for me. A couple Ibanez's at GC. Most Fenders I've tried at guitar stores have been set up nicely.

I'm not talking about set-up.... a good guitar with a bad setup is still a good guitar if you know how to look past the set-up. I'm talking about clunkers. Guitars with dead spots on the enck, weird feel to the fretboard, bad neck sets, inadequate fret dress... you get a lot of this stuff these days but people don't seem to notice
