Since its original release in 1964, the Mustang Bass has been one of Fender's most enduring bass designs, finding its way into the hands of bassists ranging from The Rolling Stones to My Chemical Romance. Originally created at a time when Fender was making waves with their line of solid body guitars (you know the ones), along came a little acoustic that had one foot in the acoustic world and the other in the electric, with its Stratocaster neck and small body.
Despite success with some big names, Fender stopped producing acoustics in the early ‘70s. The Fender FSR Malibu CE Mustang Electro Acoustic Guitar marks the 50th anniversary of the model that was first seen in 1965, but if you want one, hurry, as these are limited in number.
Small Body, Strong Voice
Electric players will feel right at home with the Fender FSR Malibu CE Mustang and beginners will find it easier to get to grips with it, as the smaller body makes it more manageable for both. This body is constructed from a laminated spruce top and laminated mahogany back and sides; a classic combination that provides a balanced, rich tone, with plenty of projection, despite its smaller size.
The guitar’s top incorporates a scalloped X bracing pattern, which provides strengthening to the instrument. In addition, its scalloped construction means it has less mass, so the top is still free to resonate; giving more of the wood’s natural nuances and further encouraging projection, and presenting a better, stronger overall tone.
Full 643mm Scale Length
Although the Fender FSR Malibu CE Mustang Electro Acoustic Guitar presents a smaller body, the scale length is still a standard 643mm. This once again blurs the lines between this and an electric, along with providing a full playing surface to enjoy.
Originally a bolt-on, the maple neck of the updated Fender FSR Malibu CE Mustang Acoustic is joined to the body with a dovetail joint. Being Fender, the neck is highly playable, with its Soft C shape feeling instantly recognisable in the hand, whether you’re a long-term fan or new to the brand.
Fishman Isys III Pickup System with Tuner
Where the Fender FSR Malibu CE Mustang really comes into its own, is when it’s plugged-in, which is thanks at least in part, to the on-board Fishman Isys III pickup system. Not only does this give you an accurate interpretation of the guitar’s natural tone to put through an amplifier or P.A system, it also offers a 3-band EQ (bass, middle and treble), so you can easily carve the tone.
Furthermore, an on-board tuner makes sure the only excuse you have for not sounding good is a lack of practice, which is unlikely with this model in your arsenal, as you won’t want to let go of it.

The RB4 body is shaped to the well-known P-Bass body profile, which has a contoured double-cutaway design that makes it very comfortable to play. The shapely curves of the body allows the bass to rest snugly against the body, whether you prefer to play it up high, or sling it down low.
The tonewood used in the construction of the body is that of alder, which has a balanced tone with a generous helping of low, mid, and high frequencies. The Redwood RB4 electric bass guitar has a simplified electronics setup that consists of a split single-coil pickup in the middle position, and is controllable via master volume and tone pots. Do not underestimate the versatility of this setup. The balanced timbre of the alder is represented perfectly, whilst subtle adjustment of the volume and tone pots can yield a distinct array of tones. Hardworking Hardware
The secure hard tail bridge keeps the strings fixed in position, whilst the nut and tuning machines work together to uphold string tension, and tuning integrity.
