Great effects

Bit of a shame it can only do one effect at a time though. I use formants and delays the most.

Decent drum machine limited by sound quality

The effects and the ability to manipulate the sounds make this drum machine stand out, compared to others of its generation, both from Boss and other brands. But the sample quality is pretty low.

Mine has a lousy silver paint job (from a previous owner), and I've never been able to get the bass synth function to work.

Good for dropping samples

I use this sampler for dropping individual samples and vocals, and the Korg ES-1 for sample loops and rhythmic samples. This one has some great effects. I had a very difficult time getting this to sync through MIDI though, it doesn't seem to like playing nice with other gear, and even when it appears to be synced, sometimes samples drift out of sync. So I try to find ways to use it that don't rely on MIDI syncing.

how did you wined up syncing it to other gear. I’d love to try and crack that nut. I have an sp-606 that I would love to see synced to it. maybe the drift wouldn't be so bad with in-family gear.

I forget. I think I put it either at the beginning or end of the chain. I also picked up some short midi cables for it, since I heard that longer ones could cause problems. Other gear was using it with in that particular set included an MC-303, DR-202, Korg EA-1, ER-1, ES-1, and Red Sound DarkStar XP2. Initially I had the MC-303 at the beginning of the chain (midi master), and the DR-202 at the end.

It's been a long time since I worked with it though, so I don't remember the exact details. Been doing all ableton sets the past couple of years, though I've been meaning to work on some hardware ones. My MC-303's sitting next to my desk, but haven't gotten to it.

well, if you figure it out, let me know and I’ll be sure to do the same should I have a eureka moment with it.

Love the sounds in this thing

Great latin/tribal digital sampled drum machine, though the memory cartridges have gotten ridiculously expensive now. Separate outs for each sound are nice if you have the mixer channels.

A fun piece of gear

I haven't gotten as much out of this unit as I'd like so far, but it's a fairly capable digital sampled synth with some analogue-modelling features. Combination drum machine and synthesizer, which is nice if you're short on mixer channels.

Fantastic rhythmic/quantized sampler

This sampler is great for drum patterns, short vocal one-shot samples, and basically anything you want to repeat on particular notes. For dropping vocal loops or other longer samples, there are many better options out there--this one's all about rhythmic and quantized samples.

Nice drum synth

Mine has a defective knob, either mod depth or mod speed (it drifts toward 0), but even so, it makes some nice percussion sounds. Kicks tend to be more clicky than punchy though.

Great machine, but somewhat limited

This is a great analogue-modelling bass and bleep synth, but its lack of an accent function and the somewhat complicated programming process limit its usefulness somewhat.
