Rock solid bass for beginners
I picked up a third hand Tanglewood Nevada about a year ago as my first bass, and I've given it a right beating in terms of fairly intensive playing, and it sounds pretty darn good for a bass that is I reckon 15+ years old (I don't think they even make these anymore). The body and neck are pretty solid, and can take a fair amount of punishment. This bass also plays fairly well outside.
In terms of options on the bass itself, you get two dials, one for volume and one for tone. So it is a fairly simple bass, but it plays well and you can get some nice and warm tones from it. The electronics are a little temperamental on my bass, but it is old (and third hand) so that is likely to be expected. The pickups are fairly low end, so I wouldn't expect to be too 'wowed' by them, but they do the job for messing about at home.

Not bad for a little amp.
I've had my frontman for at least 10 years now, and it still works just fine for me. I've found that the headphone jack can be a little bit hit and miss (but that might just be through my long term wear and tear on the amp).
The sound is pretty solid, and can be surprisingly loud for such a small bit of kit. Because it is small it is easily portable for carrying between places. I'd recommend it for home practice or for newer players, but it probably won't give you the tone or presence you'd want for performing/gigging.

Pretty decent for newcomers
My first ever electric guitar, got one of these about 14 years ago and it still sounds as good as the day I bought it. I can't personally compare it to much, but it has a pretty good sound for such a low end/low cost guitar, and should do new players pretty nicely.
My only gripe with the guitar is that it is not always that comfortable when you play it standing. The neck level strap button is not well placed as it is on the back of the guitar (as opposed to being traditionally on the side of the guitar), which (personally) makes the guitar feel less comfortable and stable when I'm playing on my feet.
