THE REVEREND V2 – OD/DISTORTION/FUZZ WITH ‘EXPANDER’ CIRCUIT

The Reverend is my take on one of my all-time favorite pedals: The sought-after, vintage Bixonic Expandora – One of the first ‘Boutique’ pedals, Made in Japan, used among the greatest guitarists the likes of Joe Satriani, Megadeth, Bootsy Collins, Slipknot… And made famous by Billy Gibbons for its ZZ Top signature sound.

The Expandora was a phenomenal Overdrive/Distortion/Fuzz, a highly evolved Rat with an ‘expander’ circuit that made the pedal dynamically sensitive, allowing users to vary the amount of distortion with the pick’s attack or by adjusting their instrument’s volume knob.

Imagine playing La Grange and being able to go from the clean part to the distortion part just by strumming harder. That’s the magic of this circuit!

Apart from the ‘Script Logo’ beta version (very rare), there were 3 variations of the pedal through the years:

EXP-2000, aka the ‘Original Version’. The most famous one, with 2 internal DIP switches to change between 3 gain stages plus the additional ‘Forbidden Setting’. EXP-2001, a larger version with slightly different sound, replaced the original switches with an external 4th knob. No ‘Forbidden’ setting on this one. EXP-2000R, the Reissue version of the EXP-2000. The internal switches were replaced by external ones and added an extra Bass switch. Replaces some of the rare components of the EXP-2000 for more widely available ones, like the TL072 chip. The Decibelics The Reverend is a part-for-part replica of the ‘Original Version’ EXP-2000 but with added best elements/characteristics of all three versions.

The Expandora Vintage Reissue is a loving recreation of the original spec pedal in a shiny round enclosure. Mythos Pedals Chupacabra

Inspired by a legend The Chupacabra takes it's tonal inspiration by the biggest little band from Texas. Utilizing a CMOS Hex chip the Chupacabra has huge amount of output and gain range for a versatile drive that melds perfectly with you guitar setup.

The gain ranges from tweed push to "your amp about to die" for some pseudo fuzz-like tones. Tonally the voicing is pretty flat with a slight bump to lows and highs without being too drastic.

A fuzz, a drive, a booster, one knob! Yes, the Golden Ratio is one of the most incredible and practical pedals of today. The idea here is to offer a fuzz that is as plug n’ play as possible, simple and direct. With just one knob, this pedal takes you from a more moderate booster to complete, dirty, and aggressive madness.

The source of inspiration for this circuit with only one transistor and selected diodes comes from the extremely rare ALAN YEE FUZZY NUTS, which gained prominence with the great master Nels Cline of Wilco.

After some modifications, we achieved the result we wanted! The Golden Ratio is even more amazing for those who like to use the knobs on their guitar to enhance their tone. If you lower the volume, you will have that delicious vintage fuzzy texture. If you leave everything at maximum, your tone will be a sonic blast, an aggressive fuzz!

Never in the way Inspired by a little known fuzz box called the "Fuzzy Nuts" (no we're not making that up) the Golden Fleece is a do it all dirt box that perfectly blends Fuzz, Distortion, and Overdrive into one little golden box of fun.

The single more knob only controls the output of the circuit so it's up to your fingers and guitars controls to shape the gain level and voice. With everything dimed it's a powerful blooming fuzz sound that sounds great hitting a pushed amplifier.

Hit the NOS Internally the Golden Fleece is a different type of one knob fuzz. The pedal doesn't rely on a pair of transistors for fuzz instead utilizing a very special silicon and germanium diode pair. Zach has chosen a very special NOS Germanium diode that gives the Golden Fleece it's unique and versatile fuzz voice.

Vintage Quirks Just like so many other fuzzes before it the Golden Fleece does have it's fair share of quirks. It's best before buffers, that includes buffered tuners, buffered effect loops of switching systems, etc. Buffers will kill the response and drastically change the voice of the pedal.

Likewise the Golden Fleece is sensitive to power and signal so use a high quality isolated power supply and good cables for the best tonal experience.There are no other internal settings, pots, switches or anything. The philosophy behind this pedal is that you just turn your mind off and play your guitar.

Active ingredient – Selected opto cells (LDR) and the classic lamp, with improved preamp and speed range to meet the needs of the modern guitarist, but seeking the original sound of the Univibe.

Recommended for – Guitarists looking for modulation that goes beyond the chorus/phaser/flanger triad and want a more vintage and complex coloration in their tones.

The Univibe, developed by Fumio Mieda for Honey (the company that would become Shin-Ei) was one of the first modulations developed for musical instruments. The Vibe effect – which sits somewhere between the sound of Phaser and Chorus – was originally obtained by the interaction between an incandescent lamp and four optical cells, and the difficulty of finding such components, combined with the needs for the original circuit’s power supply (which had an internal transformer and was plugged directly into the outlet), led the classic circuit to undergo various adaptations when “reproduced” by other brands, ranging from replacing the lamp with an LED (or LEDs), which provides a different response in terms of pulse shape and modulation frequencies – to a complete change in the pedal’s functioning topology – such as the use of OTAs, JFETs, and even completely digital versions. The Sea of Japan, on the other hand, is a faithful reproduction of the Vibe acclaimed by Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, Mike McCready, and many other guitarists, using a lamp (which, it is worth mentioning, has a lifespan of 10000 hours and will likely last for generations) and a modernized power system.

The depth control determines the depth of the effect, altering the “throb,” the shape of the sound pulse. The Speed control acts on the effect’s speed (which also affects the depth – the faster, the more intense the sound becomes, and the slower, the more subtle), ranging from almost-phaser sounds to those reminiscent of a Ring Modulator – the circuit’s LFO was slightly modified to reach speeds slower and faster than the original Univibe, offering great sonic flexibility. Additionally, the preamp was modified to offer more gain – since in the original units the volume is below bypass – and can be used as a boost – all within reach of the Level control. The C/V switch alternates between Chorus mode, which is the classic Vibe sound we hear on records, where the modulated signal is mixed with the clean signal, and Vibrato mode, which is just the modulated signal. The Sea of Japan is a project that was born classic and was developed with great respect for the history, operation, and sound of the original Univibe units.

The HW-2 is a collaboration between Oneder Effects and Bo Lueders of Harms Way. Bo’s guitar sound in the studio and live on stage spans from high-gain amp distortion to chainsaw-infused brutal metal tones, and we believe we’ve covered all the bases in this pedal. The left side is a distortion that is very amp-like and built for high gain, sculptable with 4 bands of powerful EQ. It’s voiced to sound and feel like a mix of the heaviest hitting amps in metal, punk, and hardcore. The right side is a boost that is flavored like an HM-2 EQ, without the distortion that can sometimes muddy up your gain structure. This channel is controlled by the SAW knob, which is equal parts an eq blend and gain control, giving you anywhere from a slightly mid-rangey gain boost to tighten up your signal and add more chug, to a full bore chainsaw slamming into the front of an amp. Both channels are independent, so players can use the boost into whatever distortion or amp they desire, or run the distortion side of the HW-2 on its own. While the HW-2 was developed with a clean amp as a platform in mind, Bo uses his HW-2 live through the dirty channel of his amp for gain on gain on gain! Harms Way. 2 channels. HW-2. Get it?

Controls:

BOOST SIDE (right, comes first in the chain)

Saw Knob: Increase both the gain and EQ blend of the boost. Fully CCW is unity with no real tonal change. The more you turn it up, the more level and chainsaw-style EQ is blended in. Note: there is an internal trimpot inside this pedal that can be adjusted very careful with a small screwdriver. This affects the highs and high mids of the saw sound. Factory, it comes set at 3:00, which we found is the best position for a gnarly sound without adding too much high end when engaging. Turn it down if you desire a bit less of a traditional HM-2 thing and more of a standard boost, but keep in mind there is a lot of low end heft still on tap!

DISTORTION SIDE (left, comes second in the chain)

Sliders: Volume, Gain, Bass, Mids, and Treble. Set these like you would your favorite heavy amp. Oh yeah, they light up when the left footswitch is engaged!

Presence Knob: Fine tune the top end to find that sweet spot or reduce any harsh noise. Works on the distortion side only.

Recommended for – EVH fans or anyone seeking the high-gain Marshall amp tone without driving the neighbors and sound technicians crazy.

Based on the sound of the early recordings by Van Halen, the Unchained uses JFET technology to emulate the pre and power stages of the Marshall Super Lead. The tones of Ed Van Halen are extremely difficult to reproduce with amplifiers since he used them at very high volumes, passing through attenuators – which brought that compressed, sagging, and sustained sound. The Unchained circuit faithfully reproduces such tones, featuring a powerful three-band active equalizer, providing great flexibility to match the pedal with your favorite guitars, amplifiers, or emulators. Additionally, the Unchained can be powered by up to 18v, allowing for more headroom and dynamics if the user prefers the pedal that way.

It is crucial to emphasize that, despite the references to EVH and the elusive “Brown Sound,” the Unchained is capable of going much further – its gain control is highly versatile, encompassing tones from 1970s and 1980s hard rock and smoothly transitioning through the guitar tones of 1980s metal and the early 1990s.

Recommended for – Those who consider John Frusciante’s tone as a sonic reference.

The Boss CE-1 was the first “compact” chorus pedal on the market, designed not only for the guitar but for electric instruments in general. For this purpose, its operation depended on an always active preamp that allowed selecting a high or low impedance input signal – however, this preamp remains active even when the Chorus itself is turned off. In other words, even in bypass, this preamp, which also features a gain control, affects the guitar signal.

This characteristic did not go unnoticed by its most famous users, John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Dean DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots) – and the sound of the CE-1 preamp became an integral part of their clean tone and that of many other guitarists. However, besides being an expensive and rare pedal, these are very old units that require direct plug-in power, in addition to being famously noisy.

The Chili Pre brings only the circuit of the classic preamp, allowing it to be turned off (with true bypass operation), and the power system converted to the standard 9v (internally converted to +14/-13v, just like the original). It offers all the richness of color and the significant gain provided by the CE-1 preamp at your feet, ranging from a clean boost/tone enhancer to a low-gain drive.

The Year of The Rat is a faithful reproduction of the absolute classic released by ProCo in 1985. It is a version of the Rat known as Whiteface. It is the most desired version of the pedal among guitarists and features the legendary LM308 chip, manufactured (and already discontinued) by Motorola. In the signal path, some Whiteface units had tantalum capacitors instead of electrolytic capacitors, offering longer operation and a more balanced response in the highs.

Like its original counterpart, the Year of the Rat offers a wide range of tones: its gain control ranges from a light crunch, through classic overdrive tones, distortion, to a Big Muff-esque fuzz, with the difference of a mid-voicing to stand out in the mix. The Filter control works opposite to the traditional tone control, cutting highs, and the more gain is added, the more necessary it becomes to close the control to regain clarity and note definition.

The Black Hole Sunn is based on the legendary and massive Sunn Model T amplifiers, which were designed for use with both guitars and basses. Like many amplifiers of the time, they featured two inputs: normal and high treble, each with its individual gain. Similar to the practice with Marshall Plexi amps, it is common to “jump” these two channels and use them in parallel to offer a more balanced and less shrill sound – and here, this option is represented by the Normal and Bright knobs, which refer to the gain of each of these stages.

Additionally, the Black Hole Sunn features a powerful three-band equalizer, being an excellent tone shaper and a great choice for various music genres, offering everything from a beautiful and bright clean tone to devastating sounds, rich in bass, gain, and sustain, excellent for playing in lower tunings. In addition to having a gain boost stage, the Black Hole Sunn works very well when pushed by other overdrives, boosts, and fuzz pedals. Doom over the World!
