Declan Mehrtens has confirmed his extensive use of the Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar, having played around 300 gigs with it and featuring it on nearly every track of "Cartoon Darkness." During the recording process, he fitted the guitar with flatwound strings and a Lollar P-90 pickup in the bridge. For touring purposes, he opted for a Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Special in the bridge while retaining the stock neck pickup. The guitar is tuned a half-step down, with an identical model kept as a backup.
