About

Balkans is a rock and garage rock band hailing from the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 2008, the group consists of Frankie Broyles (guitar, vocals), Woodbury Shortridge (bass), Stanley Vergilis (drums), and Brett Miller (guitar). Known for their youthful, frenetic energy, Balkans quickly made a name for themselves by opening for acts like Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Atlas Sound. Their music is characterized by infectious pop-weirdness and an unrestrained punk ethos, making them a standout in the garage rock scene.

How to Sound Like Balkans

Balkans' sound is raw and energetic, characterized by jangly, distorted guitar riffs and a dynamic rhythm section that propels their music with relentless drive. Their sonic character is decidedly gritty and spontaneous, often relying on the interplay between Broyles' Fender Jazzmaster and Fender Jaguar, both of which contribute to their distinctive jangly tone. The use of overdrive pedals like the EarthQuaker Devices Talons adds a layer of aggressive edge, while the Vox AC30 amplifier provides a classic, tube-driven warmth that complements their high-energy performances. The band's ability to blend chaotic intensity with catchy hooks creates a sound that is as infectious as it is unpredictable.
