About
Braid is an influential American emo and post-hardcore band hailing from Champaign, Illinois. Formed in 1993, the group consists of Bob Nanna (vocals, guitar), Chris Broach (vocals, guitar), Todd Bell (bass), and Damon Atkinson (drums). Known for their intricate guitar work and emotive lyrics, Braid emerged as a cornerstone of the second wave of emo, alongside acts like The Get Up Kids and Jimmy Eat World. Their sound is characterized by a blend of urgency and complexity, with albums like Frame & Canvas cementing their status in the emo and indie punk scenes.
How to Sound Like Braid
Braid's music is marked by dynamic, interwoven guitar lines that create a sense of tension and release, often shifting between melodic and dissonant passages. This sonic texture is achieved through the use of guitars like the Gibson L6S and Fender Custom Telecaster with Bigsby, driving their compositions with a raw, yet articulate tone. Their energetic performances are bolstered by the powerful amplification of a Marshall JCM900 4500 paired with a Marshall 1960B 4x12'' Cabinet, contributing to their aggressive yet precise sound. The rhythm section, with Bell’s intricate bass lines and Atkinson’s dynamic drumming, provides a robust backdrop that enhances the band’s complex musical interplay and emotional intensity.
