About

Cap'n Jazz was a seminal emo band from Chicago, formed in the late 1980s by brothers Tim Kinsella (vocals, guitar) and Mike Kinsella (drums), alongside Sam Zurick (bass) and Victor Villareal (guitar). The lineup later expanded to include Davey von Bohlen (guitar, vocals). Cap'n Jazz's music is characterized by its energetic blend of emo, screamo, post-hardcore, and math rock, defining a raw yet intricate sound that was pivotal in transforming emo into a more widely recognized genre. Though their time together was brief, the band's influence extended far beyond their Midwest roots, helping shape the landscape of indie and emo music in the years that followed.

How to Sound Like Cap'n Jazz

Cap'n Jazz's sound is a visceral explosion of chaotic yet melodic instrumentation that captures the fervor of youthful exuberance. Their music leans heavily into frenetic, jangly guitars and unpolished, emotive vocals, creating a lo-fi aesthetic that feels both immediate and deeply personal. The interplay between guitars often involves complex, interweaving riffs, a hallmark of math rock, brought to life through gear like the Fender Telecaster used by Mike Kinsella. The use of a Fender 'Black Panel' Twin Reverb amp by Victor Villareal gives their sound a bright, cutting edge, essential for capturing the band's dynamic range. Drums and bass contribute to the band’s energetic framework, with the Fender Precision Bass grounding the chaos with its punchy, rhythmic lines. This combination of gear and raw energy crafts a sound that is both aggressive and emotionally resonant, appealing to those who seek to recreate the unfiltered intensity of Cap'n Jazz's storied legacy.
