About
Califone is an experimental rock band hailing from Chicago, known for their eclectic fusion of acoustic and electronic sounds. Formed in 1997 by Tim Rutili following the dissolution of his previous band, Red Red Meat, Califone was initially conceived as a solo project. Over time, the group evolved into a dynamic ensemble with a fluid lineup, featuring contributions from musicians like Tim Hurley (guitar, bass), Ben Massarella (percussion), and Brian Deck (production, percussion). Their music spans genres including experimental rock, post-rock, indie folk, and alt-country, creating a sound that is both challenging and melodic.
How to Sound Like Califone
Califone's sonic landscape is a rich tapestry woven from both organic and electronic elements, creating a sound that is simultaneously melodic and dissonant. Their music often features textured, ambient soundscapes that are achieved through a blend of traditional instruments and experimental techniques. The use of delay and reverb effects, such as the Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai and the Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler, adds a spacious, atmospheric quality to their compositions. Guitars like the Epiphone Elitist Riviera 12-String Hollowbody provide a jangly, resonant foundation, further enriched by the warm, vintage tones of the Silvertone Model 1457 Electric Guitar (1964-1967). Califone's ability to blend acoustic warmth with electronic innovation results in a unique auditory experience that is both introspective and expansive.
