About
Centro-matic is an eclectic indie rock band hailing from Denton, Texas, known for their prolific output and genre-blending sound, which fuses elements of rock, alternative country, roots rock, and Americana. The group was formed in 1995 as a side project by singer/songwriter and guitarist Will Johnson. With the eventual addition of Matt Pence (drums), Scott Danbom (cello, violin), and Mark Hedman (bass), Centro-matic evolved into a full-fledged band. Their expansive discography is characterized by a mix of lo-fi and polished sounds, reflecting the band's versatility and Johnson's restless creative spirit.
How to Sound Like Centro-matic
Centro-matic's sound is rooted in gritty, melodic guitar tones that often echo the raw, emotive essence of alternative country and roots rock. Their music balances clean and overdriven textures, with Will Johnson frequently employing the Fender Telecaster Custom to achieve a punchy, articulate sound. The use of effects like the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver and Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano adds depth and warmth, creating a dynamic interplay between melodic hooks and atmospheric layers. Their rhythm section, anchored by Matt Pence's versatile drumming, provides a solid yet fluid foundation that complements the band's penchant for exploring both introspective ballads and driving rock anthems.
