About
COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS is a Japanese musical group originating from Tokyo, formed in 1991. The band is primarily driven by the multifaceted Narasaki, who not only plays guitar but also took over vocal duties after the departure of original vocalist Watanabe. The lineup has seen various members, with Kanno on drums and Yoshio on bass being part of its early incarnation. Their sound is a unique fusion of genres, including alternative rock, shoegaze, and dream pop, with notable inspirations from My Bloody Valentine and a penchant for blending in elements from math rock, noise rock, and even techno.
How to Sound Like COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS
The sound of Coaltar of the Deepers is characterized by its dichotomy of lush, dreamy soundscapes and aggressive, metallic edges. Their sonic palette often juxtaposes ethereal melodies with heavy, distorted guitar riffs, creating an expansive, otherworldly atmosphere. To achieve this, Narasaki employs a range of effects and equipment, such as the Zoom G11 Multi Effects Pedals for versatile soundscaping and the Diezel Herbert 180W Tube Guitar Head for its powerful, high-gain output. The use of Walrus Audio Slö Reverb Pedals adds a haunting, spacious quality to their tracks, enabling the band to move seamlessly between dreamy introspection and intense, sonic eruptions. This balance of textures and dynamics is essential to replicating the band's distinctive sound.
