About

Dead Moon was an influential punk band hailing from Portland, Oregon, known for their raw and authentic take on garage punk. Formed in 1987, the group was fronted by the husband-and-wife duo of Fred Cole (vocals, guitar) and Toody Cole (vocals, bass), with Andrew Loomis on drums. Their music, a gritty blend of garage rock, punk blues, and hardcore punk, exuded a genuine energy, capturing tales of rebellion and love against the odds. Despite their underground status in the U.S., Dead Moon cultivated a dedicated following in Europe and released several LPs on their own Tombstone label.

How to Sound Like Dead Moon

Dead Moon's sonic character was both moody and aggressive, with a sound that mixed lo-fi grit and heartfelt intensity. Fred Cole's guitar work often featured the Guild S-200 Thunderbird Electric Guitar, channeling a raw, unpolished edge through the powerful Marshall JCM800 2203, adding a layer of vintage tube-driven distortion. Toody Cole's bass lines, played on a Vox Teardrop Hollowbody Bass, provided a punchy yet melodic depth, grounding the chaotic yet cohesive sound of the band. Their music thrived on a rambunctious yet heartfelt vibe, with an emphasis on dynamic contrasts and emotionally charged performances.
