About

Rocket From the Tombs is a pioneering proto-punk band hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, known for their raw, unfiltered sound that laid the groundwork for the punk rock movement. Formed in the mid-1970s, the group originally consisted of David Thomas (vocals), Peter Laughner (guitar), Gene O'Connor (guitar, also known as Cheetah Chrome), Craig Bell (bass), and Johnny Madansky (drums, also known as Johnny Blitz). Their music is an explosive blend of garage rock, punk rock, and garage punk, characterized by its gritty energy and rebellious spirit. Although their initial run was short-lived, Rocket From the Tombs is celebrated for its influence, particularly as a precursor to the more widely known bands Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys.

How to Sound Like Rocket From the Tombs

Rocket From the Tombs' sound is unapologetically aggressive and raw, capturing the chaotic energy of the mid-70s punk scene. Their music is characterized by distorted, driving guitar riffs and a visceral, high-energy rhythm section. The use of Gibson Les Paul BFG and Gibson SG Standard guitars, coupled with the Pro Co RAT for a sharp, biting edge, defines their melodic yet ferocious tone. Amplifiers like the Silvertone Model 1483 further add to the gritty, garage punk vibe with their vintage warmth and punch. This raw, unpolished sound is complemented by dynamic, expressive vocals that convey an intense, confrontational presence, making Rocket From the Tombs a quintessential influence on the punk rock genre.
