About

The Gories are a pioneering garage rock band hailing from Detroit, Michigan, known for their raw and primal sound that helped spark a revival of the city's rock scene in the late 1980s. Formed in 1986, the band consists of Mick Collins (guitar, vocals), Dan Kroha (guitar, vocals), and Peg O'Neill (drums). Unconventionally, The Gories operate without a bassist, drawing inspiration from blues rock, garage punk, and proto-punk legends like Bo Diddley and Howlin' Wolf. Their minimalist approach and rough-hewn recordings, such as Houserockin' and I Know You Fine, But How You Doin', have cemented their status as influential figures in the genre.

How to Sound Like The Gories

To capture the gritty and unrefined sound of The Gories, musicians should focus on creating an aggressive and stripped-down sonic character. Their sound is characterized by distorted guitar tones with an emphasis on rhythm over melody, achieved through simple tube amps and minimal effects. The use of basic overdrive pedals can replicate their brash guitar sound. Lo-fi production techniques and rudimentary drumming enhance the band's raw aesthetic, relying more on feel and energy than technical precision. The absence of a bass guitar in their lineup necessitates emphasizing the lower registers of the guitar and maintaining a driving beat to fill out the sound spectrum. By embracing these elements, musicians can approximate the raw and soulful energy that defines The Gories' music.
