About
doubleDrive is an American post-grunge band hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 1996, the group initially took the stage under the name MK Ultra, with a lineup featuring Donnie Hamby (vocals), Troy McLawhorn (guitar), Joshua Sattler (bass), and Mike Froedge (drums). Known for their energetic and heavy rock influence, doubleDrive carved out a niche in the Southeastern U.S. music scene through relentless touring and dynamic live performances. Their sound, a compelling blend of grunge and hard rock, earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base, culminating in their full-length debut, 1000 Yard Sale.
How to Sound Like doubleDrive
doubleDrive's sonic landscape is characterized by aggressive, gritty guitar tones and powerful, driving rhythms that embody the raw intensity of post-grunge. The band's sound is both melodic and forceful, with McLawhorn's guitar work often employing the Orange Rockerverb MKII 100-Watt Tube Guitar Amp Head for its robust, tube-driven warmth. His use of the Dunlop JH1-D Jimi Hendrix Signature Wah adds a dynamic edge, while the Boss DD-7 Digital Delay introduces ambient textures that contrast with their otherwise hard-hitting style. The rhythm section provides a solid backbone, allowing Hamby's vocals to cut through with emotive clarity, resulting in a sound that is both deeply emotive and fiercely energetic.
