About
Dreamcar is an American electronic rock supergroup that seamlessly merges the talents of AFI's Davey Havok (vocals) with No Doubt's Tony Kanal (bass), Tom Dumont (guitar), and Adrian Young (drums). Formed in 2014, the group draws heavily from the sleek, nostalgic sounds of '80s synth-pop and new wave, echoing influences like New Order and Depeche Mode. This collaboration explores a different musical landscape for its members, combining Havok's dynamic vocal range with the rhythmic prowess and melodic flair of Kanal, Dumont, and Young.
How to Sound Like Dreamcar
Dreamcar’s sound is characterized by its lush, retro-inspired textures and polished, melodic depth. The blend of synth-driven melodies and crisp guitar lines creates an atmosphere that is both vibrant and introspective. Dumont’s guitar work often employs a combination of delay and modulation effects, such as those from the Eventide TimeFactor Twin Delay and Eventide ModFactor, to add layers of complexity and shimmer. Kanal's use of the Music Man Stingray 5 bass provides a powerful, groove-centric foundation, while Young’s precise, dynamic drumming with the Orange County Drum and Percussion Drum Kit adds a vibrant, driving force. The result is a sound that is both richly textured and rhythmically engaging, capturing the spirit of their influential predecessors while forging a distinct path forward.
