About

Flake Music was an alternative rock band hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, known for their shimmering guitar pop that laid the groundwork for the future sound of The Shins. Formed in 1992, the group consisted of James Mercer (vocals, guitar), Jesse Sandoval (drums), Marty Crandall (keyboards), and Neal Langford (bass). Their music, a blend of indie rock and pop, culminated in their 1997 album When You Land Here, It's Time to Return. The band's evolution into The Shins marked the end of Flake Music, yet their influence continues to resonate within the indie rock landscape.

How to Sound Like Flake Music

Flake Music's sound is characterized by its bright and melodic guitar work, with a clear, jangly tone that conveys both energy and introspection. The use of guitars like the Gibson J-45 and Guild Starfire IV contributed to their articulate and punchy guitar lines. The Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue amplifier added a layer of vintage warmth and clarity, allowing the intricate guitar melodies to shimmer through the mix. James Mercer’s vocals, often captured with the Shure SM57, provided a raw yet polished quality, complementing the band’s upbeat and infectious rhythms. Overall, Flake Music’s sound was a seamless blend of melody and rhythm, creating an inviting and nostalgic auditory experience.
